It's called translation, not conversion.
You can use some translator software, there are online sites which make translation of text...
But such translation is far from perfect, even far from useful.

Only way is that someone with good knowlidge translates it.

u need subtitle workshop for this. U can find it at the download section of the site.

Subtitle Workshop is just one way (one program) which can help translation.
It's possible to do even with simplest editor.
But when someone talks about conversion, and says that he is bad with english, there is no any software which can help him to make decent translation.

I want to do something similar with Polish

roughly I was thinking of extracting an english subtitle stream

using (techlands English Translator 3 to perform an approximate
translation (this is generally pretty good at recognising context i.e it knows the difference between a shower of rain and taking a shower older versions didn't)).

running this by my wife to correct bad errors in translation.

then recreating a subtitle stream since hopefully the timings of the
new polish stream would be the same as the english stream

remix the vob's either replacing the english sub with polish or creating a new subtitle stream.

then either reauthoring the new version to a 4.7 dvd or using dvdx to make a vcd with my new subtitle enabled.

Ok so far I have dvd decrypter to rip the film to disc
and dvdx to convert to vcd format.

what other tools do i need to achieve this does anybody have a procedure for doing this or managed to do this successfully.

It's a pity that more language support isn't included on more dvd's

I would prefer tools that will run on me or suse linux but xp is also an option.

with high hopes

John

You need in first place SubRip to get textual file of subtitle.
Passing it through some translator will keep timings (probably will need to try with which format it works best - srt, subviewer, mdvd).

...and then convert your translated files to subpicture stream (Srt2Sup or DVDSupTools), mux it with video and audio, replace original vob files, make a "mock" strip according to 2COOL's guides and you're done. Of course, you need to demux audio and video from original vob files. You can use vStrip to demux individual streams and Ifoedit (DVD Author mode) for muxing and mock strip.

Ask someone who knows english and french properly to make the translation. Machine translation never works, especially not if french is involved.
