Subtitle size of dvds I play via pc is always too big. The movies are usually 16:9 and my monitor is 4:3, but I dont stretch the image or whatever.

What causes this problem and is there something to fix it?

(btw, I didn't put the subs there myself, they're just prefab right out of the videostore! :)

Most likely, you can't help it. It's just the way subtitles were made.

There could be two independent sets of subs. On TV, you're watching 4:3, while on PC it's 16:9 letterbox. It's also possible to have one more set, 16:9 pan&scan. You can try to change PC player settings to letterbox to verify this. For example, in PowerDVD you have to clear the option Keep Aspect Ratio.

Thx for the additional info ( i tried the thing with powerdvd, the subs got resized with the rest of the image).

Well, this may not be what you want to do, but technically, you can control the aspect ratio of subtitles, without changing the aspect ratio of the video. Check these demos closely:
http://user33.at.infoseek.co.jp/dvobsub.html

Only, you'd have to get VOB and IDX+SUB from your DVD, which would take like 5-10 minutes. If you do that, then there are at least 2 methods:

Method 1: Play your DVD as VOB using MPC, in VMR-9 mode. Just resize the MPC screen, then the aspect ratio of subtitles will be modified accordingly as much as you like. The video size/aspect ratio will be kept the same. In VMR-9 mode, MPC renders subtitles separately (independently) by itself, so you can change the settings for subs without affecting the video rendering.

Method 2: Load subtitles (IDX+SUB) using DirectVobSub. In this case, you can change the aspect ratio etc. of the subs in the "General" tab of "Direct Vobsub Properties", like in the pics above.

There might be yet another method. Anyway both method is easy once you get VOB & IDX+SUB.
