There was an attempt to revive it though, you can find it Here (http://www.virtualdub-fr.org/), latest version is VirtualDubMOD v1.5.10.3. I still use it for the ability to add Multiple Streams (Audio), as I usually tack on an Instrumental Track onto Music Videos.
(Not too sure if VirtualDub supports that, as the last time I check, it doesn't)

FYI, the current version of VD has almost all the features used to be added in VDmod, either built-in or through plugins. see here for plugins

These 2 Links arenīt working
First link - "VirtualDub File Input Filter" topic (http://forums.virtualdub.org/index.php?act=ST&f=7&t=14639&st=15&#entry59509)
Third link - probably same as first (same topic number).
by the way, is mp3 VBR in AVI now possible in VD or via plugins?
VBR audio has been supported since VD 1.8.0.

The question is, can virtualdub be used as a replacement for virtualdubmod with the inclusion of the plugins, in terms of how its currently used with Staxrip/Megui etc?

Rather question is... VDM can be replacement for current VD?
I think - can't.
Current VD does not support some features present in VDM (for example, partially support OGM and MKV).
Some old reasons for use VDM are obsolete.
Current VD support: VBR audio, import other audio than WAV, export RAW audio (practically same as demux), selection of audio stream, ...
Also, VDM does not contain new (VD) features (smart rendering, curve editor, internal decoders for MJPEG and DV, import plugins support, ...) and of course does not contain bugfixes from last few years.

Yes its unfortunate someone hasn't taken the virtualdub reigns. I don't mean using the old Virtualdubmod and re-releasing it with a fix or two, I mean taking the current release of Virtualdub and back-adding the plugins and support for the features that are still used in Virtualdubmod that aren't available in Virtualdub.

+1 for that comment, I really require the Avisynth script editing ability
of VDMod, would love it if it came with VD regular.
By the way, I currently have 3 versions of VD installed on different
hot keys. You can just make a copy of the install directory and move it
anywhere. The only difference I've ever noticed in copying that
directory to a new install is, it pops up with the initial copyright
notice etc, probably meaning it writes something to the registry.
Just install, copy directory, remove and then do same with other VD versions.
You will of course have to create shortcuts and hotkeys etc manually.
You will also need to install your plugins in all directories.
Also, beware, I've just recently upgraded the Mpeg2 source plugin and found it
produced crashes on some MP2's. Same files loaded just fine
in VDMod and VDMpeg2. So, keep a copy of the old plugin, just in case. :)

Use Virtualdub and then use Mkvtoolnix to mux your MKV...

VIRTUALDUBMOD
Hi
I have two PC one AMD + one DELL i7
I have an inexplicably problem
virtualdubmod works very well with AMD but "don't start" with i7, excactly don't start.
I tried original virtualdub, this start but don't work to encode AVI with xvid 1.3.0, the same with nandub
there is someone that can help me to understund what could be the problem?
thanks

Try this, (sort of the current replacement for both VDub and VDubMod), VirtualDubFilterMod (AKA VirtualDub Deep Color):-

No-one should be using the now defunct VirtualDubMod, the above post linked VirtualDubFilterMod is now renamed to VirtualDub2, and is better by far than all previous versions of VirtualDub (any flavor), also includes similar Avisynth script editor to that provided by the old VirtualDubMod (many versions of which had an off-by-one-frame error in the Insert TrimSet type keyboard functions).
It's lovely, why not suck-it-and-see :)
Repeat link, VirtualDub2 by 'Shekh the Magnificent' (x86 & x64):- https://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=172021
