But why is only R affected, and not RW?
Good question, but I´m not the one who knows the asnwer...
Maybe another dye with different reflectivity in R and RW media??

I think the reason why +R has less compability than -R today may be that +R is the newest format and the manufacturers of standalone players and DVD drives have had less time to adjust the manufacturing process to make the drives DVD+R compatible.
Many of the tested players were manufactured before the DVD+R was available on the market. I guess the compability of newer standalone players is better on all formats. Most obvious is this on the DVD-RW and DVD+RW format. When I made this search one year ago I got much less compability on the rewritable formats. Maybe also the disc quality has improved a bit but I think mainly it is because the newer models of players have better compability with the new formats.
