Oggmux not reading my mp3 files

Thousand a beyond apologies, but since I could not erase my earlier thread about subtitles, I had to modify it (yes I could've left it open..but)

anyway, I tried to use oggmux to merge an avi file with a mp3 audio stream and a subtitle. At first I thought the subtitle file didn't work, but apparently it works (without even having to add the filename I might add). Yet the mp3 stream doesn't work. It 'exists' but I hear no audio. I've tested the audio stream on winamp, so I know it's not a dummy file.

What could be wrong? If I use wavemp3 to make the file a dummy wav file it gives me an error.

i assume you have other avis or ogms with mp3 where you can hear the audio (winamp playing mp3 does not mean you have a suitable ACM mp3 decoder installed as winamp has its own decoder, but i guess this is not the problem)

Another thing is: did you try a to mux a "normal" mp3 file, not packed in a wave. This whole wave stuff is so damn stupid and came up for tricking programs that would not understand mp3 itself (and maybe its really required for the whole nandub stuff). I don't have oggmux at hand so i dont know if it accepts *.mp3 in its own format, but IT SHOULD.

Mp3 is supported in all flavors by ogm (unlike vbr mp3 in avis :s), so there is no hack or other dirty trick - it should really work if you have a valid mp3 file. Now about valid mp3 files, i dont think there are encoding programs producing invalid mp3s but it could be. Just to make sure it's valid you could try to use lame (free) or the official FHG (not free) for encoding.

Could it be you added the subtitles first and then the audio, maybe it works if you add in reverse order (wild guessing, but if this would help you should address the problem to the ogm devs as this were a really stupid bug maybe noone discovered - i think most people add audio and then subs (like me), but it should work both ways)

PS did you make sure its not a stupid mistake on playback, like vloume very low or audio stream disbled in the video player. Did you try in different players or just one...etc (i know this sounds stupid, but i never heard of problems with single, regular mp3s in the new containers (ogm,mkv) and really have no clue what happened to you :)

I have no memory of how I ripped the audio from the dvd vob files, but I used musicmatch to convert the wav file to mp3. It has worked for virtualdub, but this isn't the case right now (using virtualdub).

I tried to mux it with an audio mp3 (just to test). It came out the same way. I then redid the mp3 file, and used gspot to see if it was accurate. It said it was a Mpeg-1 layer 3 320kbps file, which is accurate. However after muxing, I get a mpeg (mp1/mp2) microsoft corporation 320kb/s output from gspot. What happened?

I guess I could try to make it a ogg, but I don't know how. Also, could a moderator move this thread to the right forum? thanks

hmm the audio format did change from layer 3 to layer 1 or 2 ?
i use VDM for some time now, there is only direct stream copy for audio. But i *think* VD can reencode audio. Make sure you have set the audio to "direct stream copy" ..else it reencodes the audio :)
