2 Questions about VobSub (some subtitles not showing up)

1. When I ripped the DVD (Ronin) some of the subtitles that VobSub created were out of time. I only needed the forced subtitles since only some parts of the movie are in french, so only about 20 subtitles were out of synch, and all of them were the same amount out of synch (I had to delay them 41 minutes and 42 seconds). I fixed the problem but if possible I would like to know what went wrong so I can avoid it next time.

2. So I synched the out of synch subtitles and everything looked fine, but when I encoded the movie on some of the subtitles are appearing. The timing looks fine to me, and it's only on one part of the movie where the subtitles aren't showing up, otherwise, as far as I can tell they are all fine.

Everything before and after that is fine. If anyone has any ideas why these particular ones won't show up I would be very grateful.

i can tell you what went wrong, but i'm looking for a prevention myself...

happened to me with the Chobits DVD. thankfully there's only about 20 subs i need there (being anal retentive, i corrected the timecodes exactly).

this happens when several "episodes" are put into the same VTS. in my case, i had four episodes, and all in the same VTS, just chaptered out. so when i ripped it, the timecodes stayed relative to the original VOB, where i wanted them to count from the start of the episode.

i think we should just use a different sub ripper next time. i'm a coding dunce, but if i wasn't i'd write a little app to correct the timecodes, so i don't have to sit with a calculator for 10 mins.
