german subs - "bowling for columbine"

hi folks,

did any of you encoded the movie "bowling for columbine"? Concerning subtitles this one is imho „hardcore“. Subtitles are displayed at the bottom of the movie and if forced subs are displayed at the bottom, than the german subtitles are on top.
I’ve extracted the subs (*.idx & *.sub) with vobsub and I’d like to mux them into ogm or mkv (we’ll see). Both containers only „allow“ *.srt to be muxed. And now my question... converted to *.srt, ALL subs are at the bottom, but as I said some of them are actually on top.
The easiest solution would be ‚burnt-in‘ subs and everything is displayed the way it should but then I couldn’t turn them off if I like to. How can I arrange my *.srt file, so that everything is in the right order?? With vobsub-editor I can tick the button that my subs are on top, but then every sub is on top not only that specific one...

How can I solve this mystery??...

Have you tried the "extended" SRT format? It includes tags and coordinates. No idea if your container formats support those coordinates.

excuse my ignorance... "extended" SRT format - never ever heard of it...??? some hints, that would be nice.

Edit: searching for "extended and SRT" comes up with 4 hits but nothing matches my prob ;(

Well ... if you select the output format in subrip, it offers you the "extended srt" format option ... i.e. including coordinates. Format is like this:

We got ten minutes to go.I just came across this option when looking for sth else ... haven't had the need to play around with it so far. BTW, you can open your vobsubs with subrip, btw, no need to re-rip from the dvd.

hmm i suggest you test which DSfilter play the coordinates and wich ignore or even break if you are going to mux the srt with coordinates directly into the movie. i experieced some not so nice <font> tags showing up in a hardburned sub..after i encoded it of course >< but it might me solved in more recent versions. Else you can transform to SSA and mux the SSA into OGM and MKV, soon probably USF as well (i hope)

ok, I still haven't tried your suggestions but thanks for it... I hadn't the time to do it properly but now the weekend is coming and I will try everything I can figure out...

P.S.: I've already figured out how to insert ITALIC text into srt ;)... I can see the light at the end of the tunnel, hehe
