Positioning my subs

Exectly how can I position my subs BELOW the screen area in letterboxed view (i.e., in the black bar below the picture)?

I know we can do this by, say, VobSub, but I don't understand exactly how.

This is the way I position my subs:

When you open the vobsub window you will see that red box with the crosshairs in the upper left. The middle black box outline is your video. Click on the red box and drag it around until the crosshairs are at the position you want the subs to start (start of sentence).

I think if you drag the crosshair below the box you can put subs below the video if it's letterboxed, but I haven't tried that. I try to stay away from that in case I get a 16:9 TV, in that case the subs would be off the screen.

You can see what it looks like before you encode. On the screen you get when you press 'save and encode' there is a preview button at the bottom. It will bring up the video in windows media player with no sound. Jump around and you can see what the subtitles will look like. I usually have to go back 2 or 3 times to get it right. When it looks good in the preview I then encode.
