Ripping Japanese Subtitles From A DVD To A Text File

The title explains what im trying to do. I have a copy of subrip and it will OCR the subtitle, but do i actually have to type in every kanji? It seems like typing in 2000 kanji for every movie is a waste of time. I could see typing in evey letter in the english alphabet b/c there isnt that many, but each kanji... give me a break. I hear that you can import a predefined list. Maybe there a way i can download one of these so i dont have to re-invent the wheel.

I'm no expert with subrip, but I've used it successfully for more than a year. I've never heard of an import ability of this type. It does allow you to search though previously created character files (ie, if you ripped a DVD before you could see if the characters from that can be used to recognize the characters on this new dvd) but that only usually works for really plain yellow arial, or if you're ripping DVDs of a series or something, which, naturally, would all use the same subtitles. I suppose if someone else had OCR'd kanji subtitles off of a DVD and sent you the character file, that might work. But other than that, I don't think there is a way to do what you want. You'll probably end up "reinventing the wheel" as you put it

OCRing japanese subs, as well as all other asian subs, is a difficult task and most likely giving no good result.

Thats why we decided to support picture subs from DVDs in the matroska container, hopefully we even have this working until the big upcoming release on 4th august. In future we have also plans to compress them down further, using the GPL lzo compression library. In first tests we achieved 1:12 - 1:14 compression ratios, resulting in file sizes of about 500 - 800 KB for a complete subtitle track ..... still a lot more then SRT/SSA subs, of course, but much much easier for the ripper once we'll have it working, and with acceptable filesizes ;) ....
