Is it possible to watch original DVD with subtitles from external file ? Something like watching DivX movie with subtitles in MicroDVD Player or watching DivX movie in Media Player with VobSub installed. I jast want to know if there is some eay to do this without need of encoding movie to DivX or Xvid.

hi,
no actually i do not think that it is possible... you do not have to reencode though. it should work if you just rip the DVD, do an d2a project and then an avs script...

Could you tell me how to do d2a project and then avs script and also how to make it playing with subtitles ?

ahm well... here's (http://doom9.org/mpg/d2a-mpeg2dec.htm) the d2a and avs part...
for making it play with your scrit you can either try using vobsub like on a normal avi or you load the subtitle file into your avs script. i don't think there's an actual guide for it, but there's a lot of talk going on about it. Just use the search button (http://forum.doom9.org/search.php?s=) and you'll surely find some interesting threads!

Wrong. There is a program (freeware) named DVD Subber, and guess for what is made...
Usage is little complicated, but you may fine sync. title even if it's for different framerate. Works with ASCII subs.

Thanks. I didn't know about this program. I played with it yesterday and it works good. You're right, usage is little complicated, but I can say that now I know how everything works.

Do you know also abot some other such programs or some other ways how to watch DVD movie with external subtitles, or this program is the only one that exists ?

There is a program Subviewer. It has versions 2 and 3. 2 is little old, 3 is from other programmer, I had problems with it.

DVDSynth supposedly plays back external subs as well ... the HP has been down for quite some time, but you can still view it here: http://web.archive.org/web/20020925025514/http://www.roundelay.net/dvdsynth/prerelease.html ... and the zips can be googled. It requires its own format, though.

I will have to try this myself someday ... it also allegedly disables user prohibitions like forced subs etc.

sidenote : spyder is actively working on a MPEG ES muxer for matroska ( seen some of the code today, he is struggling with C++ now :D ), and Gabest and DaveEL were briefly looking into muxing and playback from DirectShow. Once this is possible you can transmux a complete DVD into one single MKV file, with internal SSA/SRT/SUB/compressedSUB subtitles, and of course also different combinations of them ....

@ChristianHJW: sorry, but I do not fully get what this has to do with lumis problem?! What he wants is to playback a DVD from a disk and display subs from his HDD in addition. I highly doubt that he would like to sacrifice standalone capability for subs that are muxed into matroska. If he wanted to permanently add the subs he could also convert them to a format supported by Scenarist (or equal) and reauthor the DVD adding the subs...

I would like to correct this, I don't want to play a DVD from HDD. I want to play it directly from my DVD Drive. And yes, you are right, if I would like to, I could rip the DVD, reauthor it and add subtitles that I want or only encode it in DivX or Xvid. But it would take a lot of time if I only want to watch my DVD with subtitles that are not on DVD.

I tried both DVDSubber and Subviewer that ppera2 recomended. DVDSubber seems to be better, but I had no luck yet to synchronize my subtitles with DVD, maybe I downloaded wrong subtitles, I don't know.

Subviewer is also not bad, but doesn't have a lot of features. One important is to change the type of font to view the subtitles correctly. It supports only a few of them, font for subtitles in my language is missing. And there is more of it that is missing...

If someone knows about other such programs, let me know. I would like to try them all. I tried to find some with use of search engines, but without any good results. It doesn't need to be freeware.

DVDSubber seems to be the best from that two, it is still in developmant so maybe in future will have everything that one needs to use it without any problems.

by "play DVD from a disk" i meant DVD disk not hard disk... sorry for not being specific :)

just another idea i have - more like a shot in the dark though: have you ever tried using vobsub for the job?

Also sorry, I just thought that you speak about HDD :-)

As for vobsub, I have it installed, it works great but it runs itself automatically when opening some DivX movie with subtitles in the same folder and the same name. I tried to open it also when playing DVD or DivX movie without subtitles but without any good results. So I don't know...

It would be good idea to play DVD with MPC... If you set DVobSub that always load subtitles (or if you set MPC itself to show subtitles, what doesn't work woth my video card)..
But MPC screws by me display, and I see garbage. It looks that it works bad together with Intervideo's filters. Same situation in Win XP and 98 SE by mee.

Did you have a look at Ben Rudiak-Goulds new baby, DVDSynth? IIrc it can do exactly that, play a DVD with subs from hd.

Well ... Ben Rudiak-Gould's dvdsynth project seems to be in a state of limbo, the official homepage is down (as I tried to point out a few postings further up :)). Luckily a nice person has preserved the entire site here: http://www.netxsys.com/useful/www.roundelay.net/dvdsynth/prerelease.html . (Interestingly, I could not find this page using google, altavista had it.)
What dvdsynth basically does is take a physical dvd drive (with inserted DVD), create a virtual dvd drive and allow manipulation of certain aspects on-the-fly (i.e. _no_ copying to hd required).
Text subs can be added on the fly, although they have to be in dvdsynth's own format. A converter from SSA can be found at the link above.
Apart from that, user prohibitions can be removed, so adios to all those forced subs :) ... I just tested this, it does work.
