Just had some difficulty getting the subs on Princess Mononoke to work correctly. Wanted to log what the problem was and how I fixed it to save someone the trouble in the future.
I'm ripping subs for DVD Maestro following this guide: http://www.doom9.org/mpg/dvdsubs.htm
Seems Subrip was throwing out subs that were too small. I believe the exact message was "+X skipped / too small" where X is the number is skipped (nine for me.) In the "Global Options" section there is a field that tells Subrip how short of subs you want to disregard. My program was set at 200ms. I changed it to zero and it fixed my problem.
Also, here's the header for the .son file I used in maestro to produce a nice crisp yellow font outlined in black:
*****************************************************
st_format 2
Display_Start non_forced
TV_Type NTSC
Tape_Type DROP
Pixel_Area (0 477)
Directory [ENTER YOUR SUB DIRECTORY HERE]
Contrast (0 15 15 15)
#
# Palette entries:
#
# 00 : RGB(255,255, 0)
# 01 : RGB(131,127, 0)
# 02 : RGB( 8, 0, 0)
#
SP_NUMBER START END FILE_NAME
Color (0 0 8 0)
