OK, what I want to know is if it is possible to attach or encode the occasional subtitle that pops up when viewing a DVD to an avi file.
What I mean by this is the occasional text, like in "Catch Me If You Can" that describes the current location and time, or tells you what happened to the characters after the film ended.
Hopefully one of you guys will be able to help me out. Cheers

if it's not "subtitle" might it be "closed caption" ?
search for it ! mcpoodle seems the man. read this recent thread (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=56267), especially odysseus and he points to this link (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=56865)
did you see this button with "search" on it, above ? it's really helpful once you have an idea what you're looking for :P

Those wouldn't be closed captions, as you can see them without turning on closed captions on your TV (that's what the "closed" part means). Are you sure they aren't already burnt into the video?
If that's not the case, then one of two things are happening. Either the location titles take up their own separate subtitle stream, or they are "forced" subtitles in the normal English subtitle stream. "Forced" means that there's a flag on them that causes them to be displayed even if the rest of the subtitles in that stream are not. Under SubRip's Global Options dialog, there's a checkbox for "Forced subtitles only"--I expect that would do what you want.
