rip subs from dvd to dvdr at diff resolution encode of video?

Hey there,

hope someone can help me with this.

I've usually in past always made CVDs and SVCDs, generally with hardcoded subs (if a nonenglish film), occasionally as selectable subs (tho I stopped that format after my new player wouldn't play them), all made and ripped from dvd/avi with the regular great dvd2svcd.

however, now I have a dvd-r writer,

and have started making several dvd-rs with success of having 2 or 3 movies at regular CVD/svcd resolution via dvd2svcd and dvd maestro, I reach my next challenge on the learning curve. Akira pal dvd.

My hope is to rip the dvd in dvd2svcd, frameserved at CVD 352x576 resolution (anamorphic 16:9 chosen), and to keep the ac3 audios for both the english and japanese audio so that I can optional watch them instead of having to have it hardcoded english.

At this current moment dvd2svcd is encoding the akira video now in CCE, so I'm writing this hoping I can get a reply once it is ready to be authored later in dvd maestro.

I just obtained the program Subrip, and followed the guide on doom9 on ripping them, so I have a folder of subtitles, however I have a main concern with this that I expect am likely to find problems.

Whilst setting it up to rip, it asks to set the 'minimum resolution' for the bmp subtitles (with it being a dvdr guide tellin to put them up at 720x480/576). Because I'm encoding the video from dvd res down to cvd res, I'm expecting that when it is rebuilt in dvd maestro that they will not display properly and only show a portion of it on screen, as the subtitles will be wider than the picture themselves. Even if I was to set that at 352x576, it is just a 'minimum' resolution so surely it wont really make much difference as if the subs are bigger then it isn't forcing them to stay below the mentioned resolution?

Does anybody please know how I go about ripping the subtitles in dvdr format so that I can make them run fine with the new video resolution (or if the dvd player would somehow keep them within right proportions at regular size when shown on screen?) either with subrip or alternative recommended programme.

Keep the subs in their resolution of 720x40/576. Video would stretch to fit the screen but subs wont.

No matter what the video's resolution is the subs must be at theirs. Don't be alarmed if Maestro's preview shows them wrong, on your tv set everything will be fine.

thanks....had an odd problem though.

I used the subrip to strip the subs at the full resolution. and then chose to save the .son file for dvd maestro. there was approx 1200 subtitle bmps there, and looking at the .son file in notepad it seems to refer to all of them entries.

however, I go to dvd maestro, add the video, audio streams, chapters etc...then when I import the .son file, it just says "554 subtitles imported", I then look at the first sub file in maestro and it is pic number eng000654.bmp (or something thereabouts - I dumped the subs), and is in wrong place.

so tried I rerip of the subs to be sure, but same thing happened again? then compiled the project just to see what happens, and play back in powerdvd, and the subtitles definately not playing at right time or all there...(also powerdvd showed them half off the screen (cos of the mismatching resolutions perhaps)

anyone any ideas please? was going to try on offchance the other subtitle ripper I saw mentioned the other day on doom9 software section, but doom9 main page appears to be down right now (or my pc)

video timecode not matching subrips timecode. A problem discussed alot in this board.

after a few minutes of searching I found the solution by changing the offset to 1 : 0 : 0 : 0 and seems to work a charm (also in that search solved another question was about to ask re the colours seeming wrong (loading the .spf file) :D)

I'm recompiling the dvd now and going to burn to a dvd-rw to see how it plays on the tv and real dvd player. if I double click on one of the subtitles in dvd maestro (in order for me to have changed the colour pallette) it does show the picture and the subs to be adjusted to fit correctly rather than off page (with vid res being smaller), so in that sense looks like I shouldn't have a problem....however I noticed from loading up my earlier compiles of the film in powerdvd, that they were always half off the screen. its not so much of a problem in the sense of the discs are mainly for my standalone dvd players, but is there any way to get them to play correctly on pc dvd players that you know of?

Although I haven't tried it, I ve read somewhere in these fora that windvd is capable of displaying correctly half d1 resolution as yours.

Varodvd is supporting this also but crashes a lot, at least my old version is.
