Actually, with free software, we do not encourage "wish lists", see Doom9's statement (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=52597)

It is entirely up to the author whether he wants such a list, or acts upon it. Many developers have withdrawn from discussion due to this very activity.

I so agree with mpucoder. A good thing needs to be nurtured, appreciated, not exploded. I would sorely miss the hyperjump from 1.03 to 2.3 if dvdshrink did not return before. Oh, the beauty of DVD Shrink 2.3, one screen sets it all. If I may ask one more thing, it would be a compression slider interface from 0 to 50 that will help me wring out the last useful MB :cool:

I can completely understand that, and if the author takes offence then the thread should be deleted. However, many ppl are already making requests anyway, so it would at least be nice to have them a bit more organized to help avoid repeats and requests getting lost.

As for the software being free, I would gladly pay for it or make a donation. Its much better then dvd2one and I paid for that. Plus, the author is under no obligation to fullfull any of the feature requests.

Hi dvdshrink, thanks for v2.3!

:)
How about in the next version a compression slider with twice the number of steps as there are bytes in the dvd
:)

4) Show Title Time (HH:MM:SS) . For example, if the main title is only 5 Gig, but is really long (i.e. 2.5 hours or more), then it's already heavily compressed on the source DVD, so even a light amount of additional compression (e.g. 10%) may be noticable. In this case I'll want to use CCE. So I find myself using IfoEdit before DVD Shrink to find out how much time the main title is. I guess a source bit rate value would do just as well.

Hope this helps. :)

Just select the title of wich you want to know the time in re-author mode, and click srart/end (it will tell you the exact running time !!)

First, congratulations on such awesome software!!!
On the DVDshrink I find the ‘Select-star and End Frames’ option truly fascinating.
This has allowed me to store in my HD authored DVVDs with only the movie contents, no extras, no final credits, no FBI warnings, no menus and no compression whatsoever.
And with the additional help of Ifoedit and VOBedit I have managed to create ‘demo’ DVDs from several DVDs.
Nevertheless, I’ve been trying, unsuccessfully, to create a Demo-DVD with video clips of individually authored chapters.
The scenario:
I have this wonderful DVD (Calle 54) of latin jazz in which every chapter consists of the musician’s interview (made with a low resolution camera) and the performance itself; so I want to create a new version of the original DVD with only the performances of the chapters I’m interested in; deleting all no-music stuff off each chapter.
In order to accomplish this I did the following:
1.- with the DVDshrink’s ‘start-end’ option a video-clip of the portion of the wanted chapter is made (5 in total); each placed on a separated folder, and each one including the complete set of VOB, IFO and BUP files. So I got 5 smaller-than-the-original chapters, which I can individually play back.
So far so good. Now I want to create a Demo DVD comprising the 5 video-clips.
2.- The 5 VOBs are placed in a new folder, renaming them as VTS_01_X.VOB (where X corresponds to the play back order, from 1 to 5); and deleting all IFO/BUP files.
3.- With IFOedit I then create the IFO files for the new set of 5 remaining VOBs, selecting ‘Create one PGC only’ and ‘create one chapter for each cell’ options.
4.- Once done, I open up IFoedit edit again and click ‘Get VTS vectors’ . Click ‘save’ and I’m done!!!! No such luck.
When I play my new re-authored DVD only the first chapter is played!!!
What am I missing???:(
I hope some of the gurus in this great forum can help me out with this.
Thanks in advance,
Regards,
Jose

Hi josesol07,

There's a trick I've been using in IfoEdit for a while now to deal with this type of issue. Here's the secret. After you've created you're new IFO files from the VOBs, close IfoEdit and then open the new VTS_01_0.IFO file with IfoEdit again. From the Vob Extras menu, choose "Create new IFOs" together with "Strip Streams" and "Corret Nav Pack Ptrs" (4 check boxes), but don't strip any streams. In other words, when you get to the window where you specify what streams you want to keep, keep them all. In this case, IfoEdit will simply reformat the VOBs to the new dir your specified, and create new IFOs to go with the new reformatted VOBs. Then Open IfoEdit again to "Get VTS Sectors" and you're done.

Hope this helps :)

Hi Dogman-x,
thank you very much for such a prompt answer!!!!
I'll try your trick tonight. I hope it works for me!!!!
OK, I have two more questions:
1.-let's suppose I want to add later on addictional clips to the existing ones,should I delete the existing IFO/BUP files, add the newer clips and proceed with the creation of new IFOs following your trick???
2.- sometimes when making demo-DVD I get subtitles with different color and font size from the original. Is there any not-too-complicated way to restablish the original subtitle?
Boy, you give a hand and here I go for the arm!!!
Thanks again, josesol

Hi josesol07,

First, to be clear, we are talking about using IfoEdit to deal with features that are lacking in DVD Shring 2.3, so I believe we are still on the same thread here.

1.-let's suppose I want to add later on addictional clips to the existing ones,should I delete the existing IFO/BUP files, add the newer clips and proceed with the creation of new IFOs following your trick???Yes. Just make sure the VOB-IDs are all sequential. I think DVD Shrink 2.3 will do this for you, but I'm not sure. If not, then I know VobEdit can change VOB-IDs with the "Join clips" command.

2.- sometimes when making demo-DVD I get subtitles with different color and font size from the original. Is there any not-too-complicated way to restablish the original subtitle?Sure, just use the "Copy Colors" & "Paste Colors" commands from the IfoEdit "Subtitle Color" menu. More about this is available in the doom9 IfoEdit authoring guide (in the DVD Backup section).

Hope this helps,
Dave

Congratulations on an excellent piece of software, dvdshrink :)

I hope this isn't too off topic, but here goes ...

I was wondering if you have a paypal account, so that appreciative users could reward your efforts. I'd like to make a donation and I think there'd be a number of users on this forums who would like to support your work as well. I just think that your software is far better than the commercial products out there and it deserves our support.

I appologise if this question has been asked before,

dogman-x et al,
I tried to reformat the VOB implementing your trick but didn't work for me. Checking with Ifoedit I found out I have only 1 chapter associated to 1 cell and nothing more!!!.So,it looks like the other 4 VOBs are not linked to the first one.
As I'm not sure this has anything to do with DVDshrink, I guess I'd have to initiate a new thread in the IFO/VOB edit forum!!!
thanks again

I have not seen a reply to this request, if I missed it please point me in the right direction.

I second this request. I have been an Instant Copy only user since it appeared and have not gone for the other rivals on the basis that IC is supposed to produce the best output quality. Up till now I have been prepared to put up with its downsides (Target size lottery, having to use PDI tool to do end processing etc). Now that DVDShrink is being reported as producing near IC quality I am seriously considering a move in my preffered backup app.

The thing that none of these tools does properly is title stripping. I know there are various solutions out there (thx to work by MackernX etc) but its still a bit of an artform not easily mastered and open to problems on every backup you undertake. The Blue Screen insertion suggested here would be a way of assuring that your output is fully DVD compliant. Alternatively the Title chopping functionality could achieve the same result - but its in reauthor mode only!

So please can we get one of the following solutions in the next release -

1. Ability to chop down titles in Full Disc mode
2. Ability to replace Titles with a "Blue" single frame
3. Ability to replace Titles with a sinlge blank frame (as per MackernX's approach in his guides)

I am certain this will make the app the real winner as its something that the more "commercial" products will not consider doing but is a real requirement for most of us who want to customise their backups and get compliant, player bullet proof results

PS - You can only use Ifoedit and the blank frame remux approach where you have single Titles in a Title set. If you have multiple Titles in one Titleset that you want to edit then you are in for some work with Ifoupdate and no guarentee of success - hence this request for DVDShrink

To the Author - Get your Paypal up and running - I want to pay you for all your hard work!

Ah. I did what you said, except I made one mistake. I was planning on opening the result in DVD Shrink so I could then pick the appropriate compression.
Unfortunately, DVD Shrink crashes after I tell it to open the files. It would be awesome (and a huge time saver) if DVD Shrink allowed for more than one source disk/ifo when reauthoring though.

For now, I'll try recompressing and then combining, but if anyone has any tips on how to use DVD Shrink to make a single DVDr from 2+ sources I'd be much obliged. :)

I'm too lazy to try this but re-author main movie only with dvdshrink for both sides of the disc.
VTS_01_1.VOB
VTS_01_2.VOB
VTS_01_3.VOB
VTS_01_4.VOB
VTS_01_5.VOB
ok on the second part you'll have the same and rename those to
VTS_01_1.VOB --> VTS_01_6.VOB
VTS_01_2.VOB --> VTS_01_7.VOB
VTS_01_3.VOB --> VTS_01_8.VOB
VTS_01_4.VOB --> VTS_01_9.VOB
VTS_01_5.VOB --> VTS_01_10.VOB (not sure if 9 is the limit or not)

then use DVDFAB to create video manager...no idea if it works or not.

Back to the subject at hand...

It would be wonderful if DVD Shrink had a feature to combine titles/VOBs from multiple DVDs, but there are ways of doing this currently.

I've had success combining VTS files from different DVDs. As mrbass suggests above, you can simply rename the files VTS_01_6.VOB, VTS_01_7.VOB, etc. However, I’m pretty sure there is one extra step needed before hand. The VOB ID numbers in the new file(s) must be set to start off where the VOB ID numbers ended in VTS_01_5.VOB. For example, if VTS_01_1.VOB through VTS_01_5.VOB used VOB ID numbers 1-23, then VTS_01_6.VOB should start with VOB ID number 24, and then increment up from there.

VobEdit is capable of doing this with the “Join Clips” command. However this only works on one VOB file at a time, so it gets a little tedious for titles with multiple VOB files. You have to open each file individually in VobEdit, search backward from the end to find the last VOB ID #, and then use the same VOB ID number to start the next VOB file of that title. I made a donation and asked Derrow to make this a bit easier, but that was right before he got the new job, so this didn’t happen (see email snippet below)

Anyway, after renaming the files I create new IFOs and then use the IfoEdit trick with the “Strip Stream” command but leave all streams (explained previously in this thread). This properly reformats the VOBs.

Hope this helps, Dave.

Isn't this moving DVDShrink away from it's original purpose, to quickly and simply backup a DVD? Now your moving into creative areas more fit for authoring applications. IfoEdit was headed in that direction, and is anything but a "one-click".

atreides93
9th July 2003, 22:14
yea I think some of the requests are a bit outlandish....

I have seen the dvdshrink thread a few times but never bothered looking at it until now. I just assumed it was yet another half baked dvd2one clone or something. I'm amazed that its free, and I'm amazed that people are saying it is nearly as good as IC 7.

I suppose I'm going to have to give it a try.

I typically use IC7 these days..I used to use CCE but its just a pain in the butt and I don't have the free time anymore like I used.

9th July 2003, 22:30
Hi mpucoder,

I see combining titles from multiple DVDs as more of a re-authoring feature, which is something that DVD Shrink covers already.

Specifically, what I would like to do is open 2 DVD Shrink windows in Re-author mode and then drag titles from both DVD Shrink windows into the New DVD section of one window.

I’ve tried this and it seems to work until you hit Backup and get “internal error – reason unknown”. So this feature wouldn’t change the GUI or anything. In this sense, it could be considered more of a bug fix.

This feature would be particularly useful for backing up a multi-disc TV series without any loss in quality. For example, I have a set of 4 DVDs each containing 6 episodes, or 24 episodes total. Each DVD-R will hold up to 4 episodes without transcoding, so I would like to backup the original 4 DVDs onto 6 DVD-Rs. I can use DVD Shrink as is to get 8 DVD-Rs (i.e. split each DVD into 2 DVD-Rs), but I would much rather have 6 DVD-Rs.

Anyway, I believe this is a feature that fits in the realm of DVD Shrink.

Hope this helps,
Dave.

mpucoder
9th July 2003, 22:42
It's always interesting to see what people will do with a program. The internal error is because one instance of DVDShrink knows nothing about the handles (pointers to objects) of the other. It was never intended to do this, and I'm sure the author never thought to test that.

Its ability is limited to removing things, so in that sense it does not re-author. Perhaps a better name for the operation would be de-author.

I have to agree with the multiple-dvd reauthor to one dvd suggestion. It is definitely a feature that I'd find very useful...not just for episodic dvds but also for multi-dvd movies. With the rapid progress of this program, I would imagine that this feature will added in the near future. (fingers crossed hoping for more icing on the cake) dvdRENEGADE

If i have a DVD that the main movie only fits in a dvd-r and i select it (main movie) in the DVD SHRINK without any compression (no compression) will it work like ifoedit does??? or it will compress a liiiiiiitle bit??

Not sure what the layer break will do on a single layer DVD-R disc. Probably depends on the DVD player. Mine has no problems, but others may. Anyway, after you're done reauthoring in DVD Shrink, you can use IfoEdit to get rid of the layer breaks.

BTW: I think DVD Shrink is great and I use it a lot, but I still need IfoEdit for the problems listed above. So now I used IfoEdit mostly as a post-edit tool for DVD Shrink.

Hope this helps...

@goldberg
If you are re-authoring in DVD-Shrink (as I usually do), you can use the "Create New IFOs" in IfoEdit to get rid of the layer break. There's probably a faster way, but I don't know it yet. As for Full Backups with DVD Shrink, I still haven't figured out how to get rid of the layer break.

@daehkcid
I find that the percentage of re-compression with DVD Shrink doesn't really correlate that well to how it will look. The final bit rate is a much better gauge. For example, if you have a 100 minute movie that's 7 Gig, then the original bit rate is very high and can support a large percentage of re-compression without any noticeable artifacts. On the other hand, if your movie is 180 minutes on 1 DVD, then the source bit rate is very low and probably can't support any re-compression in DVD Shrink without noticeable artifacts. So my gauge is the movie length, not the % compression. Generally, anything over 130 minutes goes to CCE, unless I really don't care how it looks for that title. You can find the movie length in DVD Shrink by going into Re-Author mode and then clicking the "Start / End" button.

@shrinkran
Just a guess, but it sounds like you may be missing one or more files in the DVD structure. If you have the source disk, compare the contents of the VIDEO_TS dir on the DVD with your hard drive. If you don't have the source disk, you can make all the necessary new IFO files with IfoEdit, then use DVD Shrink to get the size down.

Hope this helps....
