Here's what's new in 2.3:
Fixed bug in re-author module which occurred in certain DVDs with a strange PGC structure. This bug caused dvd player to freeze or lockup at specific points in the movie.
Added support for 64bit file sizes.
Added support for opening files generated by IFOEdit software.
Fixed bug which caused analysis to crash if input video stream is corrupt.
Attempt to make "Remapping VOBS" stage more reliable, even if there are errors on original DVD.
Added automatic "retry" (4 retries) if read from disk fails.
Fixed error in .IFO file output: vtsi_mat_ea, vts_tmapt_ea.
Fixed bug where video could be corrupted in some rare situations (vobu containing more than one sequence header).
Tweaked video encoder module, now slightly faster.
Fixed bug in "Still Pictures" mode, picture temporal reference is now set correctly, and sequence end code is always written.
Added "Total Processing Time" information to finish dialog.
Added support in "Preferences" for combining titles which overlap or share the same video in the DVD View. This prevents confusion where a compression level applied to one title also affects another, because they share the same video.

Vector offsets as reported by IfoEdit now work correctly! Great job, dvdshrink!! :)

This definitely does fix any pauses or freezes you may have been experiencing with 2.2 version. I tested Enemy at the Gates at it's 100% fixed. Sweet! Also it has Total Time Processed and % shown in title bar so when you minimize it you know where your at. Awesome work dvdshrink!
edit:
doom9 has two dvdshrink guides...the version 2.x is the one you want to read

1. I see in the newest version you can set it to whether you see combined titles as 1 or 2 tracks when setting the compression level (it's in the preferences). If you seperate them out, you can set compression levels for the title tracks individually, but if they are overlapping titles, does this mean you're actually setting the titles compression individually or what?
For example, Band of Brothers Disc 1, Titles 1 & 2 are combined, but if I seperate them out I can set compression for Title 1 to Level 6 and Title 2 to Level 5, however, if I go look at Title 1 I'll see that it's has both it's Level 5 and Level 6 radio buttons highlighted.
2. DVDShrink... what is the secret to your never needing sleep?
Thanks.

if you have titles using the same vobus, then the 2nd selection dictates what the common parts use. So, assume you have title 1 = regular movie and title 2 = directors cut. If you don't care about the directors cut you'd set title 2 to still pictures, then title1 to whatever compression level fits your need. Now only the special parts of titl2 are compressed as still picture stream only, and the common parts are encoded using the compression level set in title 1.

Nice work. I just did "The Ring", movie-only - 6728 mb, stripped out everything but English AC3 6-ch audio and subs at level 5. The results are VERY good. Thanks for the gift!

Is there any way to eliminate the audio selection that wasn't included? For example, I got rid of the 2 channel track, but it still maintains the option so when I start the dvd, there's no sound. I have to switch from 2 channel to 6. I know 1.3 eliminated 2 channel completely if I didn't check it.
Fyi, it does multi angles fine. :)

Yep, very nice indeed!
Just done a full disk backup of Roadkill and the results were great and I love the completion % in the task bar too, maybe I'll have to stop using IC7 now for good. :D

So like if you have three audio tracks like this:
1: Main movie 5.1 English
2: Main movie 2.0 Spanish
3: Directors Commentary
and I tell it to remove audio 2, will it really remove it and leave the mapping just as it was?
For example, if you use IfoEdit to do this, the commentary will become #2. So then in the menus to hear the commentary you'd have to select the Spanish track.
It should leave it like this after its stripped out:
1: Main movie 5.1 English
2: <empty, stripped out>
3: Directors Commentary
If anyone knows how this works with DVDShrink, what would be cool.

Is this in the works at all? This I think would be the best choice because I'm sure it would compress down to near nothing. Then I wouldn't have to strip anything out really. Just remove what audio I don't want, put color screens on the parts I don't want with DVDShrink, then use MenuEdit to disable the buttons for the parts that I put color screens on. :-) Oh, plus the audios I stripped out as well.
Thanks..!

So what's the highest compression level that you videophiles find acceptable? I have a couple DVD's that require 8 or 9 to fit. Not even InstantCopy makes them look nice.

Level 3, or maybe even 4, depending on the bitrate of the original.

I hear ya, brother! For something that large I recommend using the DVD2DVD-R/CCE method. It rocks!

DVD Shrink deals with removed audio streams differently, depending on whether you use re-author.
In full-disk mode, the stream data is removed but the references are left intact, so:
1: Main movie 5.1 English
2: <empty, stripped out>
3: Directors Commentary
In re-author mode, the stream and all its references are removed, so the end result looks like:
1: Main movie 5.1 English
2: Directors Commentary

I would like to see closer compression percentages. Maybe something like 3% differences. I dont know how hard that would be for you to do.

Thanks for an amazing piece of software. Works great and constantly improving! I just wonder about one thing: The output from DvdShrink doesn't work with TmpgEnc DVD Author. Would be nice to be able to create new chapters/menues from a reauthored DVD. Could this be added in future releases?

How I love this software more and more.
But in v2.3, I find that the layer break has not been removes yet, have it?
And--
If user can specify the default sub and audio like DVDToolbox,
DVD Shrink must be the most perfact tool.
Dear DVD Shrink, you may refer to:

to develop this feature

DVDShrink,
Would it be possible to add a "set credits" option in re-author mode?
Basically the user would crop to the beginning of credits and the program would split there. Treat the credits as a seperate title and automatically encode them in still mode.
Again, great program and thank you! :p

I just did Jungle Book 2 with DVDShrink v2.2. Compression level 10 on everything except for the main movie at level 5. I know a cartoon doesn't have the action/effects like something like the Matrix - but I am very impressed. From 10 feet away on the sofa, nobody in my family could tell the difference between the back-up or the original on either the main movie or the extras.

@Sbofen
There is a way to do what you are wanting already. In reauthor mode add the main title twice. Set the first instance to end at the credits. Then set the second instance to begin at the credits with stills compression level.

DVDShrink is getting better and better but PLEASE implement a slide bar to select the compression ratio in 1% steps (at least). It a shame to waste some hundred MBs just because the next compression step is so far away.
Anyway: great job!

Small problem with the Movie Biker Boyz. The subtitles default to on when the movie starts. I have to manual turn them off. It does this in 3 different dvd players I tried. I didnt remove any subtitles for the project. It doesnt really hurt the movie but its a little bit of a pain to have to manual turn off subs at the start of the movie.
hmmmmmmmm
16th June 2003, 20:46
The subtitles default to on when the movie starts
Perhaps a toggle switch somewhere in DVDShrink for the subtitles? It seems that some people get it so their movies default them with subtitles on and some don't. So since it doesn't seem 100% consistent all of the time a hidden toggle switch would work?
My first preference is for a percentage slide bar (or at least some way to indicate the perentage in increments of 1%). I think aside from that issue I'm almost ready to retire my copy of Instant Copy in favor of DVDShrink.
DMagic1
16th June 2003, 22:11
Well I did the same movie with DVD2One and the subs did the same thing. The funny thing is that I took the movie out and put it back and neither copy defaulted to the subs on. So I guess its not really anything needing fixing.
I second your request for the 1% increments.

For me it's 30% (level 6) ....I will never do level 9 (45%) or level 10 (50%). Only on tv episodics dvds will I do level 7 or level 8 (40%). As always, I'll always shoot for the highest video quality and strip whatever it takes to get it down to the lowest level possible (remove credits and main movie only)

Loving the software. 2 suggestions:
1) Allow a much higher compression rate, like 90% for extras, so the main movie can have a minimal compression.
2) Allow user to discard certain extras.
-Thanks for your time.

Actually i'd only like to see one addition feature in DVDShrink: Crop main movie while keeping the menu intact.
SillyWabbit
17th June 2003, 23:35
you can already do that. just delete whatever vts_*_*.vob that is not needed. use ifo edit to get vts sectors. then use dvd shrink to strip audio/shrink main movie. what you have is the main movie with menus. then use menu edit to delete the menus not being used
thop
17th June 2003, 23:55
yes but i need ifo edit to do it. don't get me wrong i'm not some lazy bastard who cannot spend 5 minutes in ifo edit .. it'd just love to see that dvdshrink so you can skip ifoedit.
SillyWabbit
18th June 2003, 01:37
yes.. it is an extra step but I spend all of 30 seconds to a minute in ifo edit, if that much. I usually use ifo edit for 2 things: to play the dvd to see what needs to left out and to get vts sectors. And I think DVD Shrink is a godsend. That program was the only reason I decided to invest in a DVD burner. I hope the author does decide to set up a donation account somewhere. The author should be rewarded for his/her efforts.

Is there any chance the average bitrate can be displayed on the screen along with the percentage of compression and video size?

Yet another suggestion:
How about adding a "Check for Updates" feature. Unless you frequent this forum (or dvdrhelp, digital-digest), you may not know that a new version is available. I like DVD Decrypter, but I don't use it all the time so I don't follow it's development that closely. But when I used it last, it notified me of the new version update. Kewl..
Thanks kas187 (dvdrhelp forum member) for coming up with the idea.

I've used DvdDecrypter, IfoEdit and CCE (when necessary) to backup around 500 DVDs. I've used DVD Shrink twice now and have to say that I'm extremely impressed. It's like somebody imagined my dream backup software and then actually wrote it! :)
So now I want to use DVD Shrink for everything, but there are still a few features I need in my old set of tools that DVD Shrink doesn't have, so I'm wondering if these could be added to DVD Shrink.
1) Remove Prohibited User Operations. When some dork prevents me from using the skip or fast-forward keys, I get really frustrated. This is one of the reasons I back-up DVDs to begin with. I can use IfoEdit after DVD Shrink to handle this, but it would be nice to use DVD Shrink for everything.
2) User selectable # of retries. DvdDecrypter has this feature. I've had around 10 titles that had problems reading. With most of these hard to read titles, I've noticed that the # of retries actually made a difference. In other words, it usually ends up reading the data, but it may take 10, 20 or 30 retries. Of the 10 titles that had problems reading, only 1 or 2 refused to read after many retries. Note that DvdDecrypter defaults to 20 retries.
3) Choice of compression. If the main movie part of the title is 8 Gig, then CCE is necessary (IMHO). If DVD Shrink had an option for either quick transcoding or slow CCE, this would be ideal. Of course, this would mean interfacing with other software, but DVD2SVCD is a good example of how this can work. Actually, probably only 10% or less of the titles I backup fall into this category, so if it's too much trouble to add this into DVD Shrink, I can live without it.
Thanks.
Hope this helps.

For 2) you can just use DVDDecrypter...

Here are the two things that I would really like to see in hte next version of DVDShrink...
The ability to set things in 1% increments.
The ability to set titles to a blue/green/or other color screen for absolute maximum compression and to keep original structure.
Thanks for listening, this program seems pretty damn cool!
Maybe an option to see how many megs/second it is processing when its doing its thing too would be cool. :-)

Now that I'm using DVD Shrink a little more, I've found one more feature that I keep reverting back to IfoEdit for. If this were built into DVD Shrink, this would be one less step.
4) Show Title Time (HH:MM:SS) . For example, if the main title is only 5 Gig, but is really long (i.e. 2.5 hours or more), then it's already heavily compressed on the source DVD, so even a light amount of additional compression (e.g. 10%) may be noticable. In this case I'll want to use CCE. So I find myself using IfoEdit before DVD Shrink to find out how much time the main title is. I guess a source bit rate value would do just as well.
Hope this helps. :)

huh? just chose Re-Author mode and drag you main movie and unchecked unwanted audio and it'll give you the amount of space your main movie will be so you can decide if it's worth using dvdshrink with it or not. Then just hit full disk mode if your doing 1:1 backups.

One more thing ...
5) Remove Layer Breaks. I can do this in IfoEdit by creating new IFOs, but it would save a step if DVD Shrink did this automatically.
Thanks. :)
