Alternative matroska splitter for directshow

That's it. With Vorbis it's jumping 40-70 % and with mp3 its 90% almost all the time. Is there a way to expand the audio buffer size? Or maybe some kind of prebuffer filter would help. It could be applayed to any A/V stream?

This is a known problem or the Vorbis DSF... We have informed Xiph about this problem in case they are willing to help :sly: as Tobias is unreachable. Otherwise there may be a CoreVorbis codec soon. :rolleyes:

When I first tried your matroska splitter yesterday night, I was instantly awed at what you had managed to do in just a couple of days. So much that when I started thinking what to write here,all I could think of were a series of incoherent rantings, in which the words, "man, oh man!" would be repeated all through. :D

It's been a few hours and now I've calmed down, but I'm still, incredibly glad. The matroska official DS filters didn't work at all for me. No matter how cool I found the weird mirage effect I got when seeking in a mkv file, I knew others wouldn't truly appreciate it :p

So now I can dump the old OGM format, which Tobias seems to have abandoned, and start putting my movies in a mkv file. And as an anime fan, one of the things I find coolest about the matroska format, are the Subtitles, which I've heard should be able to do all that SSA do. So we'll have those cool karaoke effects, that you couldn't get in an OGM.

All in all you've done a super job, keep up the good work.

I just got a mail from Tobias. He's alive and will release the sources to xiph.org. So much about "ogm is dead".

Sorry to put this into this matroska thread, but i feel i have to answer that once and for all.

I can see the growing guliverkli-repository... gabest, do you still plan on writing a DSF matroska muxer? ;) The interface should be easy to reproduce/reuse if Tobias releases his sources.

:) ;) .... Hey koepi, we at matroska are REAL opensource people and we are happy about every code release, be it even from a kind of 'competing' project :D ... did he say anything about what license it will be in ( the code release ) ?

EDIT : BTW, talk to him about hosting the code on corecodec.org !!! After all, Blacksun helped him a lot in the beginning, so he should remember that. And i still love the word 'CoreVorbis' , to differentiate a bit from the Xiph Linux geeks :D ... j/k ...

wow gabest! just tried the new build with wmp 6.4 and it works like a charm :D great work ;)
now seeking is working nicely but it seems it doesnt seek to keyframes am i right? does it have anything to do with the non-blocking seek? or maybe it's because my video had b-frames?

Do you mean you see garbage on the screen after a seek? I think I'm going to change the seeking to block until I find out what is wrong.

When the player(MPC) load an audio with the auto-load feature and you close the player it hang for a little moment(3-4seg) the cpu and then release the cpu, may be a buffer to big for audio?

The two things i want to ask:

1) Will there be subtiter support in your splitter - i cant see them. In fact many of my Anime films are in japanese, with english and russian subtiters. SO licening to the language i will never understand (although who knows... ;) ) really disappoints me.

2) Maybe it's a little offtopic, but if i burn mkv file on XCD, and then play it with your CDXA filter installed, will it work? I'm asking, because i haven't tested yet. And can you tell me, if mkv file has built in CRC checksums, like OGM does?

Anyway, the job you've done is wonderful. We're all grateful to you.

PS: Offtopic, but can anybody tell me, why can't i demux subtiter file out of mkv file with VDubMod? When i try to do it, it just tells me something like "Error while reading, seeked on bad Cluster".

Aboo: It won't output utf-8 yet, even if it did there is no subtitler filter to interpret it. The cdxa filter is nearly the same as the official xcd filter, it was made to be an svcd reader but then I realized xcd is svcd too just with any kind of file allowed in the dat. There is an element for CRC in matroska, but not used very frequently as I noticed.

Kyo: Is this a problem of the matroska splitter or mpc in general?

I hope subtitle support is the next thing on the Matroska list of things to get working. I do a fair bit of anime encoding and being able to get all my files in one container is what I'm really jonesing for.

Welll... i dont mean to be rude buet personally i prefer the official decoder it works great with me. and the gabest decoder cant handle seeking very well (at least in my comp and my files)

Thank you gabest for your excellent filter, I have one problem with it though. I created a movie and muxed it with the ac3 in mkvmerge but there is a 18ms delay that I have to put on it. So I did this in mkvmerge. However, when I play it back it plays back perfectly and in sync (at least I think, 18ms I probably wouldn't be able to tell) however the delay makes the video unseekable. I can cut you some of the file if you want to have a look at it. Other than that I am very very pleased with this filter, thanks a lot.

I think that the problem is the setup of mkvmerge, In a past post I wrote that video+aac="break the seeking with bleeding" but now I got some time and check the options against the Vdubmod ones and see that mkvmerge put "cues" also on audio(Vdubmod not), when I choose "None" the seek is good again :), have you tried with this setting?

just for the record, the problem i was having with seeking (garbage on the screen after a seek) was probably related to mkvmerge too, cuz muxing the files with the latest vdubmod (cvs) makes the seeking perfect!
@Kyo: selecting cues "None" disables them right? how can we make the cues only to the video stream like vdubmod using mkvmerge?

Use mkvmerge from CLI with that, i dont think jcsstons GUI supports that already .... i will recommend to him to use this as a default switch whenever a .mkv file with video is produced ...

Did some more serious testing, and found out that the splitter still stutters a little on playback with large files (698 MB). It is a very slight effect and more noticeable after seeking, though easily overseen and discarded. Certainly, it is nowhere near to making the movie unwatchable, but just enough to be noticed at times and be slightly annoying.

Another thing, when using mkvmerge-wxgui, I get the darned MVSCR70.dll error message, but I can't get the file that jcsstons recommends in that case, anyone can help me with that?

Apart from that I can only repeat what I said before. Great work Gabest.

@ChristianHJW: what i understood from kyo's post is that if you use a command like this
mkvmerge --output i.mkv --cues iframes video.avi audio.ogg
not only the video but also the audio would be indexed and the only way to disable this is using --cues none, which would disable indexing completely right? (with vdubmod you just have to select "Index only the video stream")
so it seemed that was a "problem" with mkvmerge and not the gui, am i wrong?

I made the mkv with the GUI and just select "none" for the audio stream(s). My commandline was:
mkvmerge --cluster-lenght 1000 --meta-seek-size 400 --output "C.\test.mkv" --cues iframes --language eng "C:\xvid.avi" --cues none --language eng "c:\audio.aac"

1. The official demuxer does not recognize a new element type which was just added as a replacement for the frame rate a few days ago. rubUx4 told me on irc that it would be fixed in the next release.

2. In this version the muxer only accepts the traditional waveformatex and videoinfo(2) formats, but vorbis is another kind (it has its own subtype and format stucture).

3. The avi splitter can't set timestamps on improperly muxed avi files, easily recognizable via virtualdub's open warning. Unless there will be a new avi splitter, transmuxing such files will never work in dshow.
