well it looks like i felt lucky too early. today i burnt the reauthored project to a DVD+RW and had a not so funny surprise :(
the disk is ok, i can play it on my computer using WinDVD BUT it doesn't play with PowerDVD and neither on my Pioneer standalone (that can definitely play the +RW format) - i have no idea why ): how can one DVD program play the DVD and another one not?

If you can play it with the dvdplayer of ifoedit you should be able to play it on an standalone. DOn't forget the get vts sectors ofcourse. Does the dvd play from your HD in PowerDVD?
I have it occasionally that a DVD doesn't play after burning, usually burning it again solves it.

hi
when i load video_ts.ifo into ifoedit and click 'dvd play' it gives me the following warning:
*No valid DVD-video volume could be located
Do you still want to continue?
when i hit yes the files play correctly. oh btw this is from the simple video_ts folder on my hd, not from an image or the actual burnt DVD.
iirc ifoupdate asked me if i wanted to 'get vts sectors' and i clicked yes... afterwards it said something like this is going to change a number of ifo files ...
powerDVD doesn't play a mounted image correctly either... and it generally refuses to load a movie from ifo files anyway (at least on my comp) but when i drop the vob files into it it plays them, but doesn't get the multiangles right (of course?)
thanks for your immediate response

wELL i GUESS THERE'S SOMETHING WRONG. mAYBE ONE OR MORE FILES IS NOT COPIED TO THE DESTINATION DIR? What sometimes happens with ifoupdate is that it creates an empty vtsset at the end.
If powerDVD doesn't play it correctly from your HD you can bet it won't play on your standalone either.
What I always do before burning btw is create an image file.

lol-... yes there is something wrong :/
i checked the files again and they're all there. the main vts set, the one containing the menu, and 6 vts sets for 6 trailes, 4 of witch i have replaced by dummy files... interestingly enough everything plays fine in windvd. i just double click the video_ts.ifo and it plays the dvd as if it were the original. i can navigate through the menu, play all files, select all audio streams (even the ones that aren't there at all) select the correct angles etc...
oh and i have created an image, same there, plays in windvd but not in powerDVD. then i've burnt this image to an RW, which again plays in windvd but not in powerdvd and my standalone...
oh and i've checked again, i've updated all the ifos at the same time, one after another judging from the last modified date except the two trailer vts sets that i've kept in their original form. i didn't update their ifo file, but i didn't change anything there either!
thanks for the help

Right now I have no clue I must confess. I'm a bit suspicious about your error message in ifoedit though. No valid dvd volume could be located.
What does exactly happen when playing with powerdvd or standalone? DOes it crash or give an disk error? I'm afraid I can't be of too much help here.
(Do you get an email notification when I post BTW, because the last couple of days I don't get any  It's just that I browse the forum and see it)

hi,
oh well i guess it must be something simple but actually i have no clue how i'll find that out and actually i do not want to start all over again ):
anyway, PowerDVD gives me the following error: Errorcode: 89030000, Unknown File format
if i put it in my standalone it just tries reading it saying 'Loading' and then suddenly says 'stop' again and just sits there. no kind of error message or so /:
i do get email notifications, perhaps you should check your settings? i'll see if another mod knows something about it. the same thing happened to me too, a few weeks ago. i think i opened a thread in general discussion about it, but it just started working again.

I really don't know, it's probably something simple as you already said (maybe filenaming/caps something).
Maybe you can start a separate thread about it?

i might, but then i'd have to explain the whole process of the creation of the disk again, but i guess it's the only way that i can draw attention to my problem! you think it's suitable for the advanced DVD authoring forum?

Hi killingspree,
I donīt want to be too pesimistic, but in my experience it is a lot easier to start from beginning than trying to find one small erorr in the whole authoring process :(.
influenza
26th June 2003, 10:45
Damn it's so annoying I don't get any notifications!
Maybe has a similar experience with the error message, so you don't have to explain the whole process I think. Just shortly what you did. if it's not suitable for the advanced forum some mod will place it in the correct forum I gues, but I don't see why it should not be suitable.

well it looks as i got no other choice ):
anyway, just one more question befor i open up my 'own' thread: would scenarist build a DVD with a bitrate that falls out of the specs? so if a multiangle part had a too high bitrate, would it build the vobs or stop with an error message?
thanks

Scenarist would give an error message for sure. I've seen it more then enough myself:p

little update: somehow it seems that PowerDVD IS in fact able to play it. just not the image file. if i go to hd playback mode, select the video_ts.ifo and everything is fine. just if i compile the exact same files into an image file it cannot play it. what i'm now going to try is to burn those files to a +RW using nero and see if it works...

mount your image, check your ifos with ifoedit. are they blank? I'd bet $$$ that they are...
since i'm pretty sure they are, the next question is how did you make the image? if you didn't use imgtool 0.90 build 4, I'd suggest that.
killingspree
1st July 2003, 10:36
oh man... you ARE right... just one thing: how the f*** could WinDVD play the image correctly then?
img tool was version 0.89 so i'm going to dl 0.90 right now and see if it works...
thanks a bunch
steVe
edit: i just finished burning the files to +RW with Nero in DVd Video (not image) mode. seems to be running ok in PowerDVD and it's also working flawlessly in my standalone (pioneer)
edit2: creating the image with imgtool classic .90 b4 worked! it plays perfectly. now going to burn on dvd+r!
oh and @ Eye's Only: in your helpfile for Dif4u you got a wrong link for daemon tools. the correct one is http://www.daemon-tools.cc
thanks again :)

It may be a very stupid suggestion, but could it be that your original dvd was in the drive and windvd played that? 9LIKE i SAID MAYBE A VERY STUPID SUGGESTION, BUT i'VE MADE THE SAME MISTAKE A COUPLE OF TIMES MYSELF)

You're welcome, killingspree. As for why WinDVD could play it, well it really couldn't, you just didn't test enough :) If you had tried to play the extras, you would have caught the error quicker. The extras wouldn't play at all, even on WinDVD. Neither would chapter selection, I believe, but it's been a long time since I've dealt with this so I really don't remember. It was a long-standing bug with imgtool 0.89 that doesn't exist in 0.90. However, if you try to remove a FS VTS from a DVD by omitting the vts_xx_x.vob files, imgtool 0.90 will crap on you like a sixth grade camper who just ate the wrong berries. Imgtool 0.89 will work almost every time in those cases though. So, through experience you'll learn what to use when.

To influenza:
You seem extremely knowledgable about this DVD (spirited away), and I need help on reauthoring the chaptors and cells in scenarist so that it matches the original. I followed trilight's and Doom9's guides (they were pretty much the same, just written differently) on multiangles, but that process just splits each chapter into two cells, one for each angle. The original cell structure of the DVD was that only the chapters that were different would have a cell block. The other chapters (most of the movie) simply have one cell. Because of this IFOupdate won't properly update the ifo file. I read about your discussion with EonBlue about doing this dvd by vobids and such, but that just flew right over my head. I'm new at this and I'd like to know how I could back up this dvd as close as possible to the original. I've just spent a ridiculous amount time this past week reading numerous guides and the forum over and over and over and over again and I'm just darned tired of scenarist randomly crapping out on me and new things popping up left and right. Thanks.

emuxing by vobid with dif4u and using the new scenaid afterwards should do this automagically for you ;)

Anyway I could learn to do this the manual way? My copy of scenarist just crashes in WinXp when exporting/importing files. I don't even get the export/import window. It just hangs there and stops responding.

ofcourse you can learn how to do it manually. But you must understand some guides then. The trilightguides are excellent.

Well I reformatted and got Scenarist to properly import scripts. I must say, this ScenAid thingy works like a charm :D However, I ran into an error when Scenarist tried to compile the project. Here's the log:

@influenza: This is probably the same error you had, where one angle was not the same length as the other. The solution you used was to use the english angle twice. I would like to keep both angles, and I was wondering how would I go about doing this.
influenza
9th July 2004, 06:17
Youmanually set the length of the angle in batchccews/docce before encoding (make sure the last frame is the same for both). Or you use dvd2avidg which should solve this as well.
SioniK
9th July 2004, 07:04
How do I know which files are for which angle? BatchCCEWS only shows me this job list:
VTS__01_V001.P.16~9_1
VTS__01_V002.P.16~9_1
VTS__01_V003.P.16~9_1
VTS__01_V004.P.16~9_1
VTS__01_V005.P.16~9_1
VTS__01_V006.P.16~9_1
VTS__04_P01.I-BFF.4~3_1.nopull
VTS__04_P04.P.4~3_1
VTS__04_P05.I-BFF.4~3_1.nopull
VTS__04_P06.I-BFF.4~3_1.nopull
VTS__04_P07.I-BFF.4~3_1.nopull
VTS__04_P08.I-BFF.4~3_1.nopull
VTS__04_P09.I-BFF.4~3_1.nopull
VTS__05_P02.I-BFF.4~3_1.nopull
VTS__05_P03.I-BFF.4~3_1.nopull
VTS__05_P04.I-BFF.4~3_1.nopull
Now I know that the main movie is within VTS01, but what does the "_V000x" part mean? Are those the VobIDs? Also, they all have different lengths, with VTS__01_V004.P.16~9_1 01:59:01:00 long, almost the whole movie length. Any help as to which files contain the different angles and how to reencode just those files and incorporate the new encodes into the final project without having to redemux and reencode everything is much appreciated.
EDIT: Okay, further examination (and the assumption that "_V00x" indicates VobID) shows that the IFO file referrences to VobIDs 2 & 3 in the opening scene. Am I correct in assuming that I need to reencode VTS__01_V002.P.16~9_1 and VTS__01_V002.P.16~9_1 so that they end at the same frame? And how exactly does BatchCCEWS do this? Does it just cut off the longer angle at the frame I tell it to end at? If so, would this result in future complications? Also, I noticed that VobIDs 5 & 6 were referrenced at tne end of the movie for the ending credits. It turns out that VTS__01_V005.P.16~9_1 and VTS__01_V005.P.16~9_1 also end at different frames. Would I also have to change the ending frames of these two angles as with VTS__01_V002.P.16~9_1 and VTS__01_V002.P.16~9_1? And my final question would be about VTS__01_V001.P.16~9_1. This VobID is never mentioned at all in the IFO file and it seems as if it's a duplicate of VTS__01_V006.P.16~9_1 (they are both the english angle of the ending credits). What's the point of this particular VobID? Sorry for the humongous list of questions, but I tend to be anal about knowing exactly what I am doing :p
influenza
9th July 2004, 09:12
Your assumption is right. The video parts are vobids. You need to check the angle checkbox for them in batchceews (don't forget to press update afterwards ;)) And you need to make sure the end frames match. So you might need to cut of 1 or 2 frames to do so.

Hmm, now I get this error when importing:

Error Importing failed
When I check the track and the scenario tab, it seems like everything was imported correctly. This error only appears at the very end when it's validating the data. Should I be concerned with this? Also, there seems to be some issues with the subtitles:

Okay, after fiddling around with various settings I have come up with a solution to my situation. What I did was leave the BatchCCEWS encoding paramenters alone for the most part. I re-encoded VobIDs 2 & 3 and 5 & 6 using the parameters set by DIF4U, making sure the angles matched each other and I checked the "angle" option. I then generated a new script using ScenAid and imported it into Scenarist. I went to the track editor tab of scenarist and manually adjusted the duration of the angles so that they matched each other. *Scenarist was able to successfuly compile my project. A big thanks to everyone that helped me get through my first DVD backup ;)!!!
*There were a few minor errors that occured, though it did not stop Scenarist from compiling. One was:
Error Audio Gap is 1 frames "D:\SpiritedAway\VTS01\VTS__01_V004-80-448K-[-215]ms(fixed)-ch61_VOBID_004_1 - 0x80 - Audio - AC3 - 6ch - 48kHz.AC3"
Error The Audio gap is filled by repeating last audio frame.
This occured once for each audio track of each VobID. However from the looks of it, it doesn't seem anything to worry about.
The 2nd one was during importing:
Error Class(Sub-Picture Play) Tag(Duration, 7203) failed to paste
This happened a few times during the importing process. I'm not quite sure, but I'm assuming that Scenarist was not able to import that particular subtitle. Although minor, this is quite annoying.

Congratulations :) Picking a dvd like this a a first problem was quite a challenge ;)
Error Class(Sub-Picture Play) Tag(Duration, 7203) failed to paste
Something wrong with the sub yes. I usually do not bother to find out if it;s just one or two and certainly not when it's not my own native language ;)

So, can anyone tell me how to backup Spirited Away properly?
I'm using RipIt4Me, DVDDecrpyter & DVDShrinkto rip and backup the dvd (backing up Main Movie only, and doing all the cleaning steps),. I want to go on to rip it using meGUI, but the audio & subs become duplicated, and the video has a second angle that only shows when converting it using DGIndex, it doesn't show when it's played back normally.
