How many original dvd's do you own? and why?

Back to the initial subject. I now know exactly how many DVDs I have. See, I'm moving in a few days so I had to pack everything, put all my DVDs in big boxes. These damn boxes are so heavy I can hardly move them.
So now I know for sure that I have ...FAR TOO MANY DVDs. :D

would you believe it, the first original DVD I bought in a shop turned out to be a misprint.
Box and print on DVD, all say "Bonanza" but movie on the DVD was the "7 Samurai" and some KungFu movie with Bruce Lee.
Well, I prefer the "7 Samurai" to Bonanza, but...
Never had problems with the "original" DVDs bought in China though.

I own only about 30 or so DVDS and growing. I like to back up though, I dont really know why. sometimes i will back up a dvd i have already backed and burn it onto a dvdrw just for the hell of it. I get all jonesed out when i dont have a disc to backup. Again, dont really know why, just like to!

I only got around 30 DVDs or so too, but they are steadily getting more. the last dvd i bought was, believe it or not, Matrix. Why?

a) it's an awesome movie but,
b) and that's the main reason, because i desperately wanted to back it up :D hehe

yeah, ya know, a few years ago, it was like you had to be a rocket scientist to back up the matrix, i mean there were thread upon thread dealing with the subject. now, i tried to use some of the one clik solutions to do it, and it just went like clockwork. it kinda takes all the fun out of it ya know, its like getting the invincibilty cheat for HALO, its just not fun if ya cant screw up:mad:

I own around 10-15. But 6 of them are Jackie Chan movies. I just love them/him. Then some anime (like mononoke hime) and a few regular movies like gladiator and the mummy.

BUT i have more divx material. I think it is "legal" to own a copy of a DVD you rented?! So i would say that i have more copies than originals BUT i usually dont buy DVDs. They are always on my whishlist for christmas and birthday!

I really have problems with the prices....
in Germany, a CD is around 15 euro but a DVD more around 25 euro. I always thought that CDs were a little too expensive BUT at least you would listen to them for hours!! How often do you watch a movie? Say 3 or 4 times. Maybe 10 times if you really love the movie. I know that the making of a movie is more expensive than a DVD but hell, more people are going to the cinema than to concerts.

So buying them doesnt really make sense to me, UNLESS you collect them. (which is also what I do, better than stamps anyway!)

oh well, i was planning on ignoring the existance of those once click backup solutions... anyway, did you do a real full backup including all the extras or just a main movie backup? i mean did they get the white rabbit extras right?
i'm just telling myself that i'll get better quality if i do it manually :D

I own about 400 DVD's.

I'm an absolut movie fan, it's my hobby.

Other people are spending their money for car-tuning, others for drinking... :)

Normally I buy only movies I already know and think they are 'worth' it...
...these are the ones I watch more than one time... :D

@killingspree, if you use dvdshrink-(an awesome program, thanks shrinkman)-you get a full copy of the dvd, menus, extras, the whole 9. of course, youre shrinking the video, so, technically youre losing quality, i havent really noticed it though. i personally only do menus and extras if theyre really worth it, i'd rather watch the movie. you can use dvd2one and do a movie only, which, uhm, gives you the movie only;) and depending on the size of the origional vid, you get little or no quality loss. there is a way to do a full dvd backup with menus and the whole 9 and split it onto 2 dvds i think, but i havent tried it. falcor

MR Chirs5, first you shouldn't call people idiots just because you won't do what they are doing. Many people back up DVDs for many reasons.

I personally back up DVDs for many reasons.

1. I don't like to have an FBI warning being locked on the menu which I can't foward.

2. I hate the confusing DVD menus. I sometimes have to create my own menus so it is simple. Movie, extras and scenes selection.

3. I don't like the intros some movies put or the Disney DVDs that jump directly to the trailers they want you to see.

4. Some DVDs say WideScreen when in fact is 4:3 but widescreen within, AKA widescreen letterboxed. This makes me to change the aspect ratio of my 16:9 TV.

And the thing I hate the most from some comercial DVDs is that THEY do comes mixed in progressive frames with interlace frames. I blow all my money on hometheater because is my hobby. I am a fortunate people that has a plasma tv and I CAN SEE the interlace frames for a frame or two. That bothers me like you have no IDEA.

On my own DVD backups thats the first thing I do, to get rid of the interlace frames.

And by the way, live your life and let others live theirs. If they are happy recording DVDs left and right let them. It is true, there is so much you can watch.

I buy the DVDs I like because I do want to give credit to the people that made them. They deserve it for making awesome movies.

I own a whopping 5 DVDs, but thanks to Blockbuster I have a collection of over 90 rips. Why do I have the five that I do? Easy. I wanted them, and I knew that BB would never carry them (at least the stores in my area).
Generally I don't care for the extras that come with the DVDs, I watch them and occasionally rip them, but my point of getting the movie is just that...the movie. Plus, there is the intellectual challenge of trying to get as close to DVD quality in the rips w/out getting DVD sized files. Just my 2 cents worth.

If a movie is good enough it deserves to be seen and heard in the best possible quality. Also those extras I like to see as well and it's convenient with a nice package.

Movies I tend to get on DVD because they really really need the highest quality are movies like Monsters Inc and Toy Story etc. Digital to digital transfers rule!

Mind you some movies are great to see on DVD like some older movies once they have been restored etc. It's like seeing them for the first time.
