How many original dvd's do you own? and why? [Archive]

I'm up to around 65 dvd's. I know a lot of people "backup" their discs and don't have the originals. I figure that if I like a movie that much it would bug me only having a backup disc. now that I have a dvd writer all my movies will be backed up and I will store the originals in a rubbermaid container. i can pack a lot of movies for trips and not worry about them being lost or scratched up since i have the originals safe at home. and the most important thing for me is they stay in mint condition which is important if you want to sell them all when the hd transfers come out.

i think people copy movies just because they can. its still a waste of money to have hundreds of dvd-r that you will probly never watch. I've seen a lot of movies and I feel that I own most of whats important to me. A lot of people seem to be collecting just for numbers. I've seen some people(edited) with thousands of dvd's and i think its a complete waste of money because for one there isnt that many movies worth owning, dvd wont be around forever, and there is no replacement plan for damaged/rotted discs. so what does having a collection mean to you?

I own around 300 DVDs. While I'm in a perfect position to rent/loan and rip, I like movies a lot so I buy movies I intend to watch more than once (rental fees are rather high here so depending on the movie, renting it twice or 3 times would cover the retail price of a disc).

I have 18 DVD's. It may looks as very little number. But considering low standard in my country and big prices of DVD's it is very much.
Actually I know only one people in my place who has more DVD's.

About motives for rip/backup: it is mostly challenge and wish to increase knowledge.

I own about 50 dvds. If I like something, I feel obligated to pay the people that made it in order to show them that I have enjoyed their product. Also I just like all the stuff like the cases, the extras on the discs, and so so forth. It just feels nice to own a legitimate copy of something.

i own around 70 dvds , i buy them for three reasons 1) highest quality avalible 2) Legal and i want the people who made the film to get the money they deserve , which turns out best for us as we will get to see another work of art by them , which i guess they would'nt do if they go $0 for :D 3) importing dvd's is cheap (as are dvd's as a whole nowadays) i just spent more money on the sound track then i did on the dvd :mad: but lets not open that can of worms again :D

i back up realy as a hobby, its nice to know the new formats and how technology is progressing. i like knowing my originals are nice and safe , and dont feel bad for watching the same dvd 100's of times . (not in one go :D lol)

I haven't done a full inventory on how many I have but it's safe to say, I own over 200 DVDs. The initial reason why I first started DVD backups goes way back to same reason I why I started with VCDs and SVCDs...to backup my Disney DVDs so that the originals won't get seriously damaged. When you have kids under 10 handling the DVDs, it's common for them to scratch it or lose it somewhere around the house. Sometimes the case and inserts gets ripped or written over when I get home from work. It was easy to buy another of the limited Disney back then as it was commonly available but now it's scarce and very hard to get at the original price. After buying about 6 Disney's limited series replacements , I definitely had to start learning how to back up DVDs. It started off as a necessity but now I look at it more as a hobby.

Well, my dear mrChri5, I may be on my way to be the ultimate idiot some day, according to your standards. Now i'm pretty sure you have some other hobby yourself from which some people might also call you an idiot (I'm not calling you an idiot here, just an example).

I have some friends who really think I'm a wacko for owning all these DVDs and approximately twice more books.
Well, as an example, these guys tend to "collect" every possible piece of information about soccer players, buy team suits, wouldn'y miss a game on TV, know every single player by his name, where he played before since he was a kid, and so on...
Does that make them "idiots" ? I'm not sure. THat makes them "passionate" people. THat's what it's all about, a passion, passion for great movies, passion for technical aspetcs behind the DVD. Mind you, what's important in life is to make yourself happy. So if some freaks are happy with 1000DVDs, and some others with 1000 soccer players autographs, so be it.

You know what ? I'm haaaappy :D

I apologise for the comment I made in my first post about people with large collections and I have edited it out. If buying a lot of dvd's makes you happy I have no right saying thats bad. I have even stranger hobbies. I collect led flashlights and have several worth 40-100 dollars a piece. I still think people should be careful though. Technology is moving very fast. Hopefully before I retire you will buy a movie for life and not just the life of the medium its on. this would be a dream come true and I would feel a lot better about buying movies. I think we are over charged quite a bit on a lot of things though. for instance the 3 stooges box sets are quite a bit of money but aren't they all long gone? who does the money go to? I know there has to be a lot of markup on a 50$ set thats 3 discs and the actors arent even alive! they also could have easily squeezed another episode on some of the discs. but I wanted the real stuff from columbia and not some cheap public domain stuff. Thats just the way life is and i should stop complaining :D

I have about 50. A lot of them I've bought used for less than half the price of a new CD. Don't you find it strange? I am sure a lot more goes into mastering a DVD, plus the media is more expensive and all. Here in Japan we must have the most expensive CDs in world -- a new album costs little more than 3000 yen, which is more than 27 USD. Outrageous!!!

thats very expensive for a cd! I bought some cd's in the past few days and they are the first I've bought in years. i ordered some from half.com for about 7 dollars with shipping. everyone is making a big deal about mp3's here but I think the sound quality is very poor compared to even the open source ogg format. I go for quality in everything. hopefully if I buy used i should have most of the music I want and get by cheap.

It's a matter of fans.

I'm definetely going to get the entire Monty Python's Flying Circus series. I'll probably consider Babylon 5 as well, and we already have some Xena. It's a bugger that those TV series have to be in that pesky 4:3 aspect ratio and with lousy DD 1.0/2.0 sound.

Besides that aspect ratio/sound problem, DVD's are a godsend for friends of different TV series.

For movies, I'm interested in getting some (weird) titles from Kubrick and Besson, oh ,and definetely The Emperor's New Groove :)

I normally rather spend my money on books (they could give you at least some intellectual challenge and entertain you for longer periods of time) or games (ditto), but recently I've been purchasing more DVD's that's good for me :)

Anyone who says "save your money and get a girlfriend" obviously has very little experience of women, cos they cost an arm and a leg to 'maintain'! I don't own any porn, but I do know this : the cost of a few porn flicks on DVD is NOTHING compared to the cost of a few meals, birthday presents, bunches of flowers, engagement & wedding rings, and several hundred pairs of shoes!

Makes porn look like money well spent, to me! :D

Oh, and back to the original question - I own about 35 originals, and I, like Doom9, prefer to own the originals. This also applies to my CD collection (I have about 400 original CDs). Backups are (and should only be) just backups - a poor facsimile of the real thing, no matter how well done.

At numerous occasions it can be, hence my phrase 'could give'.

I consider my copy of 'University Physics' extremely challenging, but also very rewarding reading experience. It also counts as 'other people's fantasies', in a certain way, but so do movies.

Oh, do I need to mention my other all-time favourite, 'The Scientist And Engineer's Guide To Digital Signal Processing'? But seriously, I do read plenty of pure fiction too because of it's entertainment value.

Don't know about the book but I know which city you reside in Mr. Hakan Konig. Do I get a bonus point for that? BTW, how's Linköping this time of year? I came across a population survey for Linköping dating from 1998 to 2001 and in 1998, there's were MORE women and men.:eek: From then on, the number of women decreased gradually along the years and now, Linköping has more men. Well I spent three years in the UK, in Nottingham, and in Nottingham there is allegedly anywhere between 3x and 6x as many women as there are men. Personally I don't believe that, or at least not unless it includes Old Age Pensioners! STILL, there really ARE an unmistakably large number of beautiful women there!

And as why the number of men increases, it's probably because there is a technical university here, which draws the attention of young men en masse but rarely attracts women. The ratio of men:women at the university is something like 1:10...

And right now Linköping is a very nice town, at least now that the snow that came last week has melted away. Today the sun is shining, it is 10°C warm (at 08:00) and it will probably reach 20°C during the afternoon.

I own about 200 originals. I buy em cause I like em.
My wife is also a movie lover and now freely admits that the fortune spent on home cinema was well worth the money (she thought I just wanted to by a stereo) haha... Until she heard a good AC3/DTS track and saw what a DVD looked like.

I bought a DVDR for backups and for producing my own home video on a current format that might be useful 5-10 years from now.

And forget about the cost of a girlfriend... Wait till you have a couple of kids and a wife to maintain!!! :) Not only does it cost a fortune but you NEVER get to use that home cinema anymore cause you can't when the kids are up and you have to have it soooo not loud when their in bed... Doh... and sex.... well, that's what gets you into this position and is also responsible for you never having it again afterwards ;)

As for pirating stuff well, each to their own. I think TV episodes should be cheaper, the advertising you're forced to watch during the original broadcast made more than enough profit for those shows. $30 for 2-4 episodes you've seen before and the 5 mins it took someone to author the disc is just plain robbery. You're better off hiring them once every couple of years when you feel the need to see them again.

Falcor, I may not be a Mod anymore, but I have to agree with our friend. The rule clearly states English only.

How many I own depends on how you count it. I own several TV series that have 6 or more discs in each set along with my movies.

If you count those as 1 then it would be around 275 DVD's and about 400 Laserdiscs, which I am planning on copying to DVD sometime soon, maybe.

If you count those as each disc then the number is well over 300.

More then any other reason the ripping of movies is a hobby that is for the fun of it. I have done far more conversions then burns. I probably burn 1 DVD for every 5 or 6 that I convert and in most cases it's onto an RW disc to watch a DVD that I rented, but never watched. Once watched they are erased.

I have also replaced a disc or two that I owned, but destroyed.

Actually English is almost 100% derived from other languages. If you believe My Big Fat Greek Wedding every English word comes from a Greek word.

Instead of flaming maybe a little simple "this is why" would work wonders. Why get so upset when it is such a little thing easily explained and easily misunderstood? Then instead of making yourself look angry and anti-forum you would make the others look bad. Flaming and insulting never serves any good. Misunderstandings happen what seperates the men from the boys is changing that to understanding.

LOL about the spelling part. Sorry, I am more of a Sands of Iwo Jima type. the reason i reacted so abruptly, was i was at first put off by empere's response, which sounded very imperialistic to me. I am an american, I do not speak any other language, the post was not in "my language" And I believe we don´t need that rule, it should be pretty obvius that you have to post in English. If you have something to say to anyone in particular in your language, then write him/her a Personal Message. then he throws one of these
:angry: in there. if he had read the whole thread prior to his knee-jerk response, he may have picked up on the implication. so, initially i had flamed him, later retracting the public flaming and sending him a PM instead. i was going to let it die there. then you came and reinforced his retort and i was like "WTF" as far as being anti forum, i have been posting and lurking here for a few years, and have learned more here about a given subject than any other avenue of learning i have been exposed to in my life. so, anti-forum, i am not. i have learned a lot from you in particular, and i guess thats part of the reason that it irritated me, i was like "et tu Brutus?" anyway, I hope it dies here and now, since its into the negative return area, i have expended more energy just defending myself on this stupid post than it takes me to run around the block.
