Having read a lot about the experiments done and people playign with different settings is there a definate concensus on fixing the file size in Instant Copy? Theoretically, the new registry settings should fix this but I'm not experienced enough with the program to be able to figure out the right settings.

Well... just tried Green Mile, savequality set to 0. Slider left on default. And files came out at 4 Gb... Damn

Any other tries?

My DVD+R says 4.7G 2 hours.
Instant Copy defaults to no more than 4.31 unless you do the F5
forcing command. My question is how high can you go. Right now I've got IC7 updated working on White Orleander. I used IFOEdit to make a hard disk copy only of the movie with several sound tracks and the sub title... size came to 4.78g.... IC7 I'm guessing should reduce it to 4.31 because I left it on the default. How high could I have force IC to take it?

Also with the new update can you still use the reg hack?

I just tried this as well. I have these settings:

DVDAnalyzeMaxRel=20
DVDAnalyzeMinAbs=20
DVDSaveQuality=0

Movie: Ice Age

I manually set it it so the predicted was 4.37gb. The five pdi files that I ended up with amount to 4.24 GB (4,556,759,393 bytes).

Not what I was hoping for. Owell. If someone else comes up with any magical numbers that seem to work, please post! :-)

hmm.. I am having great luck. *knock on wood* I have made 2 tests that resulted in the exact size it predicted.

My method:
Ripped with DVDDecrypter in File mode
Fed file directly into IC, no IFOedit involved.

Deep Space Nine Season 1 Disc 5:
Items removed: 2.0 English audio (removed in IC, not ifoedit)
Predicted size: 4.31GB
Final size: 4.31GB

Star Trek The Next Generation Season 5 Disc 2
Items Removed: 2.0 English audio
Predicted size: 4.36GB (adjusted each episode to 53.33% and moved the menus up until the slider at bottom showed 4.36GB, then used F5 trick)
Final size: 4.36GB

Reg settings I changed:
DVDAnalyzeMaxRel=16
DVDSaveQuality=0

I'll try a movie later tonight or tomorrow and see if those turn out the same. But as of right now, IC is working perfectly for me. Anyone else getting perfect sizes?

What is your DVDAnalyzeMinAbs set to? And when you say DVDAnalyzeMaxRel is set to 16, you mean it looks like this in the registry right?

DVDAnalyzeMaxRel REG_DWORD 0x00000016 (22)

Is that right? If you tell me what the DVDAnalyzeMinAbs is set to I'll try your method on IceAge and see what I come up with.

Thanks for the info man..

Allistah,

yep, that is right.

DVDAnalyzeMaxRel REG_DWORD 0x00000016 (22)

DVDAnalyzeMinAbs REG_DWORD 0x00000016 (22)

DVDSaveQuality REG_DWORD 0x00000000 (0)

Hope this helps.

Edit: You might want to delete the discdata.add and discdata.adi in the IC install folder before you run it again. I also disable the online transcoding database. Those might have something to do with my success so far. I delete those files every time when its done with a disc.

Allistah
14th March 2003, 03:18
Ok, giving it a whirl now with those settings. I always delete those two files and have the transcoding db off. What I'm testing again is Ice Age. I've set it to 4.36gb just like you did. I didn't trim out any audio or anything. I just left it all automatic and then unchecked automatic so I could increase one of the videos so I hit the 4.36gb mark. I'll let you know what it turns out like when its done. Should be a couple hours.

I too had the Pinnacle driver check come up after reboot after the 7.0.1.114 upgrade. I also let it do its thing, but am wondering exactly what it did do!

The main reason I'm interested is that I use WinFax to automatically receive faxes on this PC and it seems it is now having problems initializing the modem at startup saying the modem "could be in use by another program." If I manually set WinFax to auto-answer, all is well until the next reboot.

I have never seen this before on my PC... I don't exactly know what IC would have to do with modem drivers, but this does not seem like a coincidence.

Has anyone else seen anything like this? :confused:

Ok, I tried Ice Age with both set to 16 and 0 for the DVDSaveQuality setting. I set the slider for 4.36gb and what I ended up with was 4.30gb (4,621,977,953 bytes). I'd call that damn close to the limit for a dvd drive. I'll try these settings with a few more dvds and report back my findings.

-Allistah

mrbass

well DVDSaveQuality = 0
didn't give me the 4.33GB instead 4.08GB.
then I tried DVDSaveQuality = 0 and DVDAnalyzeMaxRel = 25
and that gave me 4.06GB....
So unless someone finds a magic combination I think I'm just going to stick with sizing it to 4.6GB and get the 4.3GB like I've been getting.

edit: to clarify and answer Allistah's question
Both times when I got 4.08GB and 4.06GB I had the slider set to 4.33GB. Before this I've done a few and when I set the slider to 4.6 I would come up with sizes of 4.3GB or so.

Allistah
14th March 2003, 09:23
When you're setting your slider so that it reads 4.6gb, how many times has the movie been over the limit for a dvd? Just wondering how close you're getting with a setting of 4.6gb.

It can vary from DVD to DVD as they have different bitrates and the extras can be totally unpredictable whereas the main Title is normally predictable

the highest I have been is 4.82 and the lowest I have been is 4.58 and both gave me just uder 4.37, so there 4.6 is not the magic figure is just the one that works with most average DVD's, tho I use 4.65 myself

Hi all,

strange IC7 problem encountered yesterday. I did the update and set the following two registry entries:

DVDAnalyzeMaxRel=16
DVDSaveQuality=2

like someone suggested here. I then started to process the files of DVD "Insomnia" (ripped with DVD Decrypter in file mode first), setting the slider to 4,32 GB. At about 90% of the "analysing video quality" stage, IC7 stopped working with a black preview window but no error message. Just stopped.

I then changed the registry values back to their defaults, rebooted and started again. This time it ran completely through but in the end I had a total file size of only 4,02 GB which is obviously somewhat dissatisfying. But better than having IC7 stopping as before...

Can anyone confirm this behaviour of IC7 when changing the registry values? Or was ist just "coincidence"?

Thanx for your help!

Gero

herrde,

I don't think your problem is related to the reg settings you changed. I had been having the same problem with a couple of discs and have not changed those reg settings.

I have, however, seem to have found a solution to the "black screen" freezing of IC: Set the DVDHideConversionPicture reg key to True. This prevents IC from displaying the actual video frames as they are being processed and has completely cured my problems with "black screen" freezes.

I think these freezes are related to video card drivers. I use an ATI 9000 Pro 64MB card with Catalyst drivers. Up 'til last night, I was using Catalyst 3.1 and was having the "black screen" freezes before applying the reg change above. After the reg change, no freezes. I have also updated to Catalyst 3.2 drivers, which were just released yesterday, but have not tested to see if this helps when the reg change is set back to False...

I don't really mind not seeing the actual picture of what is being processed. Particularly because I don't sit in front of my PC for two hours and watch what's going on! I just let it run while I watch TV or something, so who cares if IC displays the video or just the "three arrow" image. :)

There is also at least one other post on this forum which says that disabling the video display actually speeds up the process a litlle. Bonus!

Update: So there is no confusion, the reg change described above only works with IC 7.0.1.114 or later!

Good luck...

Hi falves,

thanks for the hint; I'll try that! BTW: I have a ATI Radeon 9000 with 64 MB too, so you're probably right!

So anyone know if that "Size" bug got fixed in this version?

mb1
14th March 2003, 21:58
No it is not fixed. They work on it.

But if you like set DVDAnalyzeMaxRel to 100% then you should have no more size bug.
That is kind of a 2pass ...

Did this:

DVDAnalyzeMaxRel to 100%

Didn't cure undersizing, but did increase amount of time to transcode.

Hi,

I can't get the update installed. I've tried nearly everything: reinstall -reboot - delete registry entries -reinstall- reboot - ...

Always the message appears, that a full version has to be installed, but it is.

I'm getting crazy!

Can anybody explane me how I could make the update work?
With witch installed versions of IC7 does the update work?

Thanks!

Hi all,

How do I know what Video Title Sets (VTS) to keeep when customizing the movie?

MackemX
15th March 2003, 12:20
use the preview Tab and then click play to see the movie

but note that it's a chance to take if you use IC to remove unwanted Titles

Using dvd decrypter, can I take a movie that I decrypted in file mode and convert it to an ISO file with out the original. When I did file mode I grabed evrything.

what exactly are you trying to do?

you don't need an ISO with IC or convert it, just select the VIDEO_TS.IFO for the movie using the Hard Disk option in the IC Device selection window and it will create the PDI files ready for burning or burn them automatically if you choose to

I'm sure if you browse the forum most of your queries will be answered :)

Has this actually worked repeatedly for you or was this just a guess? I've tried it on several DVDs and it's still hit and miss. The last DVD came out at 4.14GB using the 100% setting.

filmking, undersizing isn't the "size bug" I was talking about :)
I was talking about the one where on a few movies it claims it just can't fit the movie in 4.31 gigs no matter what you do. I've only had it do that on a few movies.

atreides93, I had this problem with my U2 - Best of DVD, and still have this problem with the IC7 update. So I guess nothing was fixed there... The only way to copy this disc was throwing some of the extra's away :-(

However, one thing I must say (though I haven't tested with the update) is that sometimes IC screws up my menus. Starnge, because I usually keep them 100% (so no compression is done), and in the final product I can see sometimes strange 'holes' in a menu, showing parts of another menu. Now I don't smoke the kind of things you're thinking, I say the truth. Has anybody else experienced anything like this?
Arianos (me...) said:
I too have experienced the "Holes in Menus" that Fmazzanti mentions. ......It happens on two backups of mine (Robin Williams Live on Broadway & The Emperor's New Groove), but I stopped, because upon investigating further, these "Holes" do not appear on Power DVD nor various Standalones, so they might be standalone specific. (E.G. Philips 743, Marantz 4200E, both made by Philips)

As the original quotes - postings were here, I only saw fit to place the "solution" to the mystery here also, although it seems it affects only 2 people with 2 particular standalones in the whole wide world :) :
DVD: Swept Away (madonna)
Burned with IC7 (was in a hurry) : Macroblocks, holes on menus, fuzzy static blocks ONLY on Philips 743 standalone.
Plays perfectly OK on Cyberhome 212, PowerDVD.
Made VIDEO_TS folder with PDI Tools, burned with RecordNowDX 4.6, plays OK everywhere.

So,the conclusion is something I already knew, and had stopped doing. Burning with IC7, that is. Because from the titles mentioned by me above, Robin Williams was for sure burned with IC7 (No title on DVD-R), while the emperor was with Nero 5.5.9.17 (I wanted to check another bug at the time)
Now, if Fmazzanti could confirm this?

Fmazzanti
17th March 2003, 11:57
Arianos, old pal...
I never burn with IC7 directly. I haven't tested this feature actually. I always burn with Nero. Besides, I can understand PowerDVD doesn't display such things, actually PowerDVD is much less restrictive than standalones. And i can also understand CyberHome machines doesn't have such problems, because these are also less restrictive than other players....

Yes it it. Grab a shoe, blast it to be flat, throw it inside and it will play. That's why i say that checking something works on it doesn't mean that it si really DVD compliant.

yomper
17th March 2003, 22:57
Cyberhomes are good but a lot of them don't play nero burnt dvds as the wizard burns in udf1.05 mode and not udf1.02 which is more compatible, not that i use nero anyway,

hooz, why would someone need a registry patch if they own the legal version of the software??
When you install the retail version, it sets up those registry settings for you.

When you install the retail version, it sets up those registry settings for you. That's not true at all. I actually own the legal version (0.91) and the update didn't work for me on one machine. The one that did work was the machine that I had originally installed the demo, then the full (purchased) version, then the update. Going straight from the full version to the update didn't work.

So anyway... Don't assume that only the pirated versions won't update correctly. That is not the case at all. Judging from the volume of emails I've gotten asking for the registry file link, I'm guessing that I'm not the only IC owner having the problem either.

Thanks for the link and the download. However after seeing what is in your reg file I must agree with the mods that it does contain info related to licensing - maybe you ought to remove this bit before making it publicly available.

I haven't used your reg file per-se, but did use it as a fine toothcomb to go through my reg and delete keys that weren't being deleted when I uninstalled IC. Upon reinstall from scratch after doing this it worked.

h00z
26th March 2003, 00:57
You're right. I didn't notice that the reg file contained my CD Key. I've deleted those keys and updated the linked file. It should be clean now for all the "Warez Police".

Trust me, I didn't mean to be distributing my CD Key... I shelled out the money for the program and it was worth every penny. If you try it and like it, buy it (but you might still need the reg fix like I did).
