Flickery subtitles when playing on TV

I have been following Trilight's guide for DVD9>DVD5 and have got it just right apart from the subtitles. I used Subrip to save as bmp then saved as Sonic format and then using script convert to convert to son format. Trouble is once I test the DVD out on my TV the subs are all flickery and multicoloured, although they should be white with black outline. Any ideas?

I think I've figured it out. In Subrip, when you choose the colours I changed the grey to black and it seems to have solved the problem by about 90%. It still flickers a bit but I'm guessing they all do that unless you burn the subtitles into the video.
