From AVI to VCD and burning subtitles

Hello forum

I have got a movie in AVI format, the language is Japanese. I have subtitles in spanish for the movie in MicroDVD format (but I can convert to another format if I need with subadjust). I want to convert that AVI to VCD and burn the subtitles in it... in the black bars that I need to add anyway so the image remains clear. I know how to pass from AVI to VCD with TMPGEnc but I do not know how to burn the subtitles in the movie.

I have been searching the doom9.org page a lot but I cannot find what I need or maybe I don't know where to look.

I have seen a similar problem in this forum but I couldn't understand much of it. The solution was about Avisynth and frameserving but all too complicated for me to understand. I guess I need to grab the basic stuff regarding frameserving.

Anyway my question: is there a way to convert the movie in TMPGEnc at the same time that the subtitles are burnt in or do I need to burn the subtitles first and then convert the movie (or maybe convert, then burn subtitles)? If so, is there any guide on how to do that? Or maybe someone can point out some quick steps.

Best way is, as you said, using avisynth. There is allways antoher way. You can try using VirtualDub with vobsub filter and than frameserve it to TMPGEnc. You have to learn about frameserving as soon as possible 'couse it will help you alot.

It explains how to add subtitles with avisynth and with virtualdub. I come from the Gknot world so Virtualdub sounds more familiar to me than avisynth, so I will go with virtualdub first. Thanks for replying ffroms, this guide explains just what you said.
