DirectVobSub subtitles don't appear over the black bars ?

Hi.

I just created a .sub file using VobSub and I am trying to make it work with DirectVobSub. When opening the avi file, DirectVobSub loads automatically and the subtitles appear on the screen. However when trying to reposition them and make them appear in the lower black line of the movie (the movie is 16:9), it is impossible cause the subs go "behind" the black bar.

It seems like the subs only appear when they are positioned between the black bars of the movie (i.e. where the movie picture is)

Why is that ? Can't I just make them go over *OVER* the black bar ?

I assume, then, your movie only has black bars because your player adds them when playing the movie.

Is this an .avi you encoded? Did you let GKnot crop the movie? If so, the black bars were cropped, and only the actual movie remains, so when you reposition the subtitles to the 'area where the black bars are' and they 'go behind the black bars' they are actually being played in an area where the movie doesn't exist :D

There are ways around this in certain players, BSPlayer, for example, can play Subtitles in any area you want.

You can tell DirectVobSub to add black borders to 16:9 movies, making them 4:3. AFIAK this is the default setting, but just to make sure check:
- Open the DVobSub control panel by double-clicking the arrow in your tray(when playing a movie with subs).
- Go to the 'General' tab.
- Set 'Vertical Padding' to 'Extend to 4:3'
- Close and restart the movie.
It now should play in a 4:3 resolution(640x480 for example) and black bars should have been added. You can definately place your subs over them. I've done this multiple times. This of course only works with players that are using DVobSub(like WMP 6.4).

First off, it was me who encoded the movie and yes I cropped the black bars through GKnot.

I understand why the subtitles won't play over the black bars, however I think that one of the subtitle files that I downloaded off the net for Armageddon played over the lower black line... I may also be wrong though.
