Vobsub 2.20 generates empty .sub files

After upgrading to Vobsub 2.20 it will no longer rip subtitles correctly, if I choose to stream process with SmartRipper: Vobsub simply generates empty .sub files.

Just trying ripping the subs directly off the DVD. Also are you trying to run Vobsub on a Stream Processing Sub file like where Smartripper saves the subs to there own file? I didn't think vobsub could handle these types of files. Its always perfered to run vobsub on the vob files that are Ripped.

I have that same problem, but even with vobsub 2.18, so, maybe is the movie not compatible with.

Schultz: Yes, that's what I've been doing as a workaround. And no, I didn't strip the subtitles out with Smart Ripper.

cbwarz: I'm sure the DVD is not to blame; the same disc ripped fine with Vobsub 2.18.

Unfortunately I have the same problem. I tried to extract subtitles from the movie "Panic Room". The VOBs were preproccessed with smartripper to remove the subtitles and audio tracks I 'm not interested in. The result was an empty .SUB file. The same movie works fine with VobSub 2.18, so it's back to 2.18 for me until Gabest does something to fix it.

Just simply DO NOT uncheck "[0x??] Others", because then SM will delete everything about the current vob/cell id.

i had the same problem with season 5 from buffy

i did what gabest said: check "[0x??] Others", and it worked with the first episode of each dvd, but it didn't with the others

so with ep 1 it worked and 2, 3 and 4 not: empty sub-files
ep 5 worked, 6, 7 and 8 not
etc.

does anybody know why this is happening??

Isn't episode 1 in pgc1 and the others in following program chains? What vob/cell ids are listed for the pgcs?

Well, I tried checking the "[0x??] Others" checkbox and it still failed, this time with "Star Wars: Episode II" R2. The only way I could get a usable .SUB file was to transfer the entire program into my HD unproccessed. But I don't like this method because my HD space is rather limited:( . Also, VobSub displayed duplicate subtitles, e.g. if there is one real entry for Greek subtiles, VobSub displays 2, one after another. Maybe this happens only with this particular movie, I don't know. But to cut a long story short, the newest VobSub version complicates things that used to be very simple for me. It makes stream proccess capabilities of Smartripper almost useless. Waiting for next version...

cca: Have you tried vstrip or to index the dvd yet? The duplicated subtitles are really duplicated, usually there is stream one for normal and one for letterboxed display.

Btw, I can give my ftp address to anyone who has such problems and has the needed bandwidth to upload full dvds for testing :)

No I haven't tried vstrip because I never used it and I don't really know how it works. What do you mean by indexing the DVD? As for the duplicates, If found it peculiar because I had no indication that there were 2 streams for every language in Smartripper. And also, when I specified I wanted to keep the Greek subtitle stream in Smartripper, while keeping the Others checkbox checked, I had an empty .SUB produced with either one of the two duplicate streams VobSub showed me.
My bandwidth is rather limited I'm afraid, I surf the net on 64K ISDN line, so uploading 5 or 6 GB would require days for me :) . I think I must learn to use vstrip anyway, but still, the old versions of VobSub were simpler for the kind of ripping I do, exclusivly DVDs that is.

You can download vstrip from doom9 with a GUI and deccs, you'll see it isn't any harder to use than smartripper.

Just wanted to add that the duplicate streams were indeed duplicated beacause there is one stream for letterboxed configuration and one for normal. That leads me to believe that maybe there is some kind of a problem with Smartripper when the movie has this kind of subtitle configuration which in turn leads me again to vstrip, or ripping without stream proccessing. I'll try some other movie without duplicates to confirm.

Just to let you know 2.20 didn't work for me either. I'm using Smartripper 2.41 on X-files season 2, R2 and the ripping process breaks and leave an empty .sub file. And the "panic button" is gone as well ... Back to 2.14 it works like a charm. Noticed 2.21 was out, gonna try it now.
