Muxing subtitles into the avi

Like many people on this board, I'm not new to ripping, but am new to subtitles (all the DVDs I rip are in English, so I don't usually need subtitles). I encoded Star Wars Episode 2, only to realise after that I hadn't done anything about the subititles which appear when a random alien language is spoken.

I've now ripped the correct subtitle stream using VobSub and have a *.idx file and a *.sub file. When I play the avi in Media Player the subtitles appear correctly (and the DirectVobSub filter is in use).

How can I mux the subtitles into the avi itself? I tried SubMux, but it only seems to accept *.ssa and *.srt files. How do I mux with *.idx or *.sub files?

Surely I don't have to re-encode the whole movie using VobSub as a filter in Virtual Dub?

What you need to do is use Subresync that comes with Vobsub and open your ifo/sub files and then save them as Ssa which will perform a OCR on the sub files to get you a SSA file then you can mux those into an avi file. or put them to srt file and mux them into an Ogm files if you are planning to use that format.

When I try to do that I get an error when I hit save (ie the program crashes and windows closes it).

Any idea what this could be due to?

Hum no clue.. What version of VobSub are you working with. latest is 2.20 . And if that don't work the newest SubRip can process idx/sub files and rip them into ssa format for yea so you can use that method also if you can't get SubResync to work for yea.. Btw what OS are you using?

I'm using Win 2k Pro, and VobSub 2.20.

I'll try the SubRip method now.
