Subtitles cover whole screen

Can anyone help ?

I am trying to extract the subtitles from a DVD using SubRip and then use them in DVD Maestro. I have done this numerous times successfully. But with this particular DVD when I play the DVD with subtitles on whenever a subtitle pops-up the whole screen is block red with the subtitle text in the normal position. You can't see the film !!!!

Subrip reports that Closed Captions were detected. I don't know if this is relevant.

What's going on ???

I've got the same problem. My last subtitle job was about 6 weeks ago. Up until then, subs always came out just right (I followed the trilight DVD9 to DVD5 guide). I would rip with subrip and save in maestro format. Recently, I started a couple of new projects (spiderman and brotherhood of the wolf) and my subtitles end up coverning the whole screen. What's up with that?? I followed the same guide, step by step. Timing is right, colors are right, screen position is right, but the subtitle .bmp fills up the whole screen (white in my case, I suspect yours is red because you did not inport the .spf Subrip pallete).
Anyways, I'm currently trying to fix it by changing my subrip settings under the cropping tab from 720 x 480 to something smaller, like 30x20 or something small like that (in an attempt to reduce the .bmp size). I suspect this approach may not work, but we'll see. I just dont get why the same method is producing different results. I know that these same subtitles have been succesfully ripped by others using that method, so its probably not the DVD.
At heart, I think it's a problem with the subtitle background color. It should be transparent, and it's not. In our case, it seems that the background is filled with color, but I dont see any place to change this setting to transparent.

anyone else have this problem?

But my DVD is NTSC. I tried the method anyway substituting (no pun intended) the PAL values for NTSC and still doesn't work.

Any other ideas would be appreciated.

I've actually been playing around this week with the subtitles and figured out the .son trick with the header that oddyseus was talking about. I've got my subs to work no problem now.
RichardGoulding, just plain experiment/play with your contrast settings, whether within the application or right in the .son file, and your problem will go away. Modify this part of the header in the .son file to directly change the contrast of your colors:

--->Contrast (15 0 15 15)

One of those is probably the red that fills your tv screen, just set to zero and it should work.
