Is there an easier way to tell if you need to rip subs, other than scanning through the whole movie to see if subs are used at all?

Only reading (=opening in some rip. soft) the IFO content is required to obtain info about subtitle streams in 99.9% cases...

What in particular would I be looking for in the IFO (let's say with IfoEdit) to see if subs are used?

subtitle rip soft = VobSub and SubRip. Try these, open IFO to see present subtitle stream languages.
