Gone In 60 Seconds : Subtitles too high on the picture

Hi.

I just ripped Gone in 60 Seconds and I have encoded it to Divx 5 using GKnot. The subtitles are permaently encoded into the movie, however I noticed that they appear way too high on the picture.

I also noticed that there are two subtitle streams for each language in VobSub. I tried both of them and I have found out that one of the streams shows the subs almost in the middle of the picture (not in the bottom) and the other one shows the subtitles lower than the first stream but still they appear way too high on the picture...

The weird thing is that the subs appear normally on the bottom of the screen when playing the DVD in PowerDVD.

1) Has anyone elese experienced this problem with this movie ?

2) Any suggestions on how to make the subs appear lower on the picture ? I have tried the VobSub configuration to place the subs lower on the y axis, however the program treats each subtitle line differently and thus, every line appears in a different place on the screen (those of you who have tried it, know what I'm taling about).

I haven't done Gone In 60 Seconds with subs, but I've seen what you describe with other movies. I don't know why GISS would be any different than other movies. But I don't consider it a problem. Whether you work with the higher subs or the lower subs (but using the lower ones makes more sense), you can still adjust their position until they're the height you want.

(those of you who have tried it, know what I'm taling about).

I use the Y Axis on every movie for which I need subs (many). I've never seen what you're describing. Usually Y=+40 or so works well-sometimes more, sometimes less. It is true that when there's one line, it goes down low, and when there are 2 lines of subs, the bottom line is the same height as before, and the top line is higher, but that's the way it's supposed to be. Maybe you're more used to working with DVD2SVCD where, when there are 2 lines of subs, the bottom line drops down.

If you want to change and make soft subs (not burned in), you can fix them so they play in the black bars (with wide screen movies) and don't touch the video at all. Maybe you should try that. Can't get any lower than that.

Edit-I was researching this some more. I don't know if this will help you or not. It's from the vobsub.txt:

Q: What is that red box in the config dialog on the right?

A: First, you can drag it holding the left button or change align mode with the right. Second, it has two meanings: If the align button is turned off, it symbolizes the full screen area (0,0)-(720,576or480). Subtitles can appear anywhere inside as it is defined in the VOBs. That's why if you move it up a little, just above the lower black bar, some subs on the top won't stay on the screen. To solve this, use the aligned mode, where the red box only shows the orientation. Your subs will appear in that region from the crossed lines.

i used to do permanent subtitles myself, so before you save yourmovie.avs and yourmovie_credits.avs you can do a preview of the movie. so that you can check if they are big enough (you can scale them) and in the right place.
now i use separate subtile files, because they have better quality, i.e. they are sharp and clear, they stay in the black area, like said before and you can scale then on-the-fly, and also very important... if you share them on the net using DC++ for example.

Going from perm subtitles to soft subs is an evolutionary process.
it took me more than 100 movies with "perm's" to figure that out!
i'm also doing autorun screen's now!!
it a lot more work but it does pay off in the end.

@manono : The faq that quoted in the end of your post made it all clear to me... The reason why I couln'd get the subtitles to appear in a constant place was because I had Allign turned on. When I turned it off, and used Y=+60, the subs were right where I wanted them. Thanks !

@destermido : The reason why I don't soft encode the subs is firstly because they require DirectVobSub for playback and thus I can't take the CD to a friends PC and watch it and secondly because when I tried to do so, for some weird reason,the subs never appeared on the screen...
