How to burnin subtitles on some parts of the movie?

Hello.

I am trying to DVD-DivX Traffic and I would like to learn how to burn in the subtitles only in those parts of the movie when the spoken language is not english. I am thinking to break up the movie using DVD2AVI into different parts and encode them separately, then burn the subtitles and put the avi files back together. Also when i do compressebility test in GKnot, even if I do 3CD DivX it is still pretty low at 52.2% using full resolution at 716x388 (without the borders). Is this movie just poorly compressible or what?'

2 cd's are enough with resolution 640x...

I think these non-english dialogs have it's own subtitle stream or are FORCED in the english stream.

Why you want to "burn" subtitles into movie? In your case is better to make VobSub subtitles and set in filter settings "Show Only forced" while playing. Or rip them using SubRip with option "FORCED subtitles only" to get them in text form to view using DirectVobSub filter. Or the best solution - download the subs from some of subtitle collection servers.

And your resolution is unacceptable (only Mod4). If you're using GKnot for cropping and resizing, I'd suggest setting the W-Modul and H-Module back to their defaults of 32 and 16. It may (or may not) play properly on your system, but not on many others. Also, you'll get better compressibility by using the defaults.

And as zuggy suggested, lower the resolution. As you guessed, Traffic isn't very compressible. And I suggest you not break up the movie for encoding. You'll get a more even quality throughout the movie by doing it all at once and splitting later.

One way of adding some lines of text to just parts of movies is using vdub with ssa and the subtitler plugin.
Install all the programmes (the instructions are on this site somewhere in the guides). Just open ssa once this is done and it is a really straight forward program to use. There is a box to show start time, end time, and one to type in the text to be shown. There is a button under the text box which can change the colour, style and size (I recomend at least size 48 text)of your text. Type in all your text + times and save. Open your .avi in vdub, set vdub, load the subtitler filter (fitler loading is all in the guides) and select your .ssa file. Set vdub to full processing using the drop down menus. Then click on compression (again from the drop down menus) and set DivX at the same bit rate you made the avi with. Then go to save as avi. Hopefully this will give you an avi with part subtitles.

I forgot to say that first you just have to encode the film normally without subtitles. No need for any splitting.

It's not good idea to encode movie 2 times.
And even it's not good idea to "burn" subtitles into avi, in 21st century.
