How do I make SubRip *.srt subs permanent on a DivX ?

Hello :)

I ripped a DVD to make a DivX and I needed to edit the subtitles so I used SubRip 1.035 and now I have this *.srt file with subtitles.

Now that I have edited the *.srt file I would like to make the subtitles permanent on the DivX (i.e., burned in).

How do I do that?

P.S.
I did go ahead already and create the DivX with VBR MP3 Sound so my understanding is you have to somehow re-encode it to burn in the subs but I'm not sure how to do this. Also I want the quality to be as good as possible so I wouldn't mind starting from scratch (I still have the DVD) if there is a way to add the subtitles from the *.srt file as the DivX is created. Bear in mind I normally use GORDIAN KNOT with DivX 5.0.2 Pro.

I just wanted to clearify what it is I am trying to do.
Maybe there is a better way to do it?

I have a DVD with some scenes (actually probably 90% of the movie) in English dialog whereas the other 10% of the movie is in Italian.

That 10% Italian part has English subs.

When you play the movie back on a DVD player the subs ONLY show up when the soundtrack goes into Italian.

However, there is a second audio option that has a 100% Italian dialog soundtrack with complete English subs.

So I'm trying to use the part English/part Italian soundtrack and I just want the subs to show up during the Italian parts. Now the DVD does this but everytime I try to rip the subs I get ALL of the subs, not just the parts for the Italian dialog only portion of the soundtrack.

So my solution was to use SubRip (version 1.035) to rip the subs using OCR into a *.srt file. I then started (though I'm not done yet) to edit the *.srt file to cut out all of the subs that are not needed so the only subs left are the subs for the Italian dialog portions of the soundtrack (since I'm using the part English/part Italian soundtrack VS the Italian only soundtrack).

Confused yet?

Now, my final solution is to burn the subs into the DivX so I have subs BURNED IN that are there only for the Italian portions. So far I've used a program that can play the subs back from the *.srt while playing the DivX and all looks good (my editing is working and the timing seems to be correct and in synch). But I would rather just burn them in when I am all done.

So am I going about this the right way? Any suggestions?

When I use vobsub in Gordian Knot it says there are 4 English subtitle streams but the DVD only has 2 ... 1 is used to play back the subs only for the Italian part ... 2 is used to play back the complete subs (for when you are using the 100% Italian soundtrack).
When I used SubRip it correctly said that there were only 2 subtitle streams but even though I ripped the first stream it still gave me ALL of the subs, which is why I am slowly editing it down. Don't know why I just can't rip the subs correctly since the DVD player seems to know how to correctly read them from the DVD.

Did you try the "forced subs only" options of SubRib and VobSub on the English subs? I think that might give you what you're looking for (only subs for Italian dialog).

Well I tried the forced subs option in SubRip but that didn't work ... it gave me ... NOTHING!

Didn't know VobSub had that feature ... maybe because I'm using an older version? I use the version that comes with the Gordian Knot installer which I am guessing is probably not the newest.

I dunno so far I think I need more help.

Well i can't remember if its in the Dialog Besides DVobSub but i belive you have to edit the idx file to get it to show up in VobSub you might take a look.. But to your point.. You can use TextSub in the newest vobsub package as a plugin for VDub or avisynth and have it load your srt to place it in the video during encoding.
