Subrip problems

I'm fairly new to this so it's probably just me, but I'm having problems following the DVD subtitles guide (http:www.doom9.org/mpg/dvdsubs.htm). It says set the Preset to free, which I do, but the only colors available in the 'Colors in the Output Bitmap' section are greyscale (the red and blue Outline and Antialiasing are not red and blue). If I then change to the Scenarist Preset I get the red and blue options but loose the cropping and other tabs (and they remain hidden even if I set the preset back to Free). What this basically means, is it is impossible for me to follow the guide as what is happening doesn't tally with the guide.
As I say, I'm new to this and I'm getting very confused.
