View Full Version : VobSub cannot rip subs from seamless branching DVD

Hello Gabest!

I can't rip subtitles for The Abyss Special Edition properly. This is a seamless branching DVD, so VobSub 2.18 can't set timecode for certain cells properly. Some cells start with time relative to the start of the cell (i.e. close to zero) and some start with timecode relative to the start of the movie. In the attached zip (look here: http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?threadid=16897) there are two idx and sub files, for the second and third cells in the movie, plus original IFO file from The Abyss DVD. The second cell starts with time code 1 min 14 sec, but it's 33 sec long! This timecode is relative to the start of the movie, the first line there is spoken indeed 1 min 14 sec after the movie starts, _not_ after the cell starts! (Its tmecode should be 17 seconds after the cell starts) The third cell has correct timecode, its starts with almost zero.

If you could fix that bug, I'd be able to choose proper cells from the VOB set manually and rip subtitles only for the movie version I want. I can give you VOB file I ripped those subs from, it's "only" 1GB. I have 10 mbit connection to the net, so that's only a couple of hours to send you this VOB. Please let me know if you need any additional info, and thank you very much for the best subtitle ripper in Solar system!

Did you try to index the dvd while selecting the right cells? E.g. 1,2,4,5,... or 1,3,4,5,...

Are you talking about selecting some cells in VobSub Configure? In the dialog where you select Vob/Cell IDs in addition to languages you gonna rip? Yes, I did that. First, I tried to rip the whole movie subtitles. I loaded vStrip, found out which Vob/Cell IDs belong to the program chain I gonna rip, then selected only those IDs. It helped somewhat, in that subtitles became not the interspersed stream of lines from both titles in the VOB, but the single stream, just from the title I want. Except for wrong timecodes. If not for them, everything would be fine.
I guess I'll have to send you that VOB so you can do analysis on your own. You just pick a couple of cells, like 2 and 3, as I did in that abyss_subz.zip, and then look into your source and VOB and see why it sets wrong timecode for some cells and the right one for others.

So what are you trying to tell me? The IDs of those cells I gotta rip? I know them already from vStrip. I have the list of IDs for all of the four PGCs. I can even send it to you if you want, but you can load vStrip for yourself and see what I see.

Sorry, I didn't know you already looked up the cells using vstrip :)

Right. Hold on for some time please, I'll take that DVD from the lib today and put it on my ftp. Could you please email me your IP or hostname? I need it to allow access to my ftp, it's IP based.
Thanks!!
