I always used permanent subtitles, but now I've got a DVD player that supports (CVD style) switchable subtitles. Great, but...
After making the first SVCD with CVD subtitles (with dvd2svcd 1.0.9b2), the subtitles worked perfectly (are visible and can be switched on and off) but they don't look as I expected. They are white or grey on a grey background which is almost intransparent. Difficult to read and to conspicuous!
I downloaded the test disk (PAL with 2 subtitle tracks) from www.vcdhelp.com and these subtitles looked exactly the same.
Now before everybody starts saying that my dvd player or the firmware is probably incompatible with CVD: I also downloaded the test image from a french site, refered elsewhere in this forum, and to my great relief (and astonishment) I saw that my Daewoo 5000D player was capable of producing great subtitles on transparent backgrounds. This test image was made with I-Author, but it doesn't explain how.
So I started to experiment a bit with I-Author to see whether I could make correct subtitles myself (not ripping them), but with the same negative results. Also I tried different color settings in dvd2svcd thinking that it might be due to wrong color settings. These settings, however, seem to have no influence whatsoever. The same applies to the color settings in I-Author (primary and highlight).
1) Has any one got a clue? How did this French guy to it? I-Author produces .cif images, which I convert with CDMage and then burn with Nero. Could this have anything to do with it?
2) Furthermore, does any one know of a tool I can use for viewing the actual overlayin the final mpeg file?. Most tools can only work with vob (although it's a kind of mpeg-2 as well,isn't it).
3) Who can set me on the right track?
