Positioning Subtitiles with VobSub

I am trying to add subtitles as per the divx 5 guide using GKnot.26 and VobSub 2.14

According to the guide once I have extracted and selected the subtitle stream I want, I "can position the subtitles and change the color combination in the window that you've seen before."

My question is how does this work? In the window I have seen before there are several color boxes all of which are greyed out and I can not select them. Also on the right of the screen is a larger 4:3 box with a smaller 4:3 box in its center. The smaller 4:3 box starts off filled with a red rectangle of the same size. I can move and stretch this red box using the controls provided. What does this represnt? I assume this is how you position and size the subtitles, but no explination is given and I have no idea how these changes are affecting the subtitles.

I have tried encoding without changing any of these settings, but the text was far to high up the screen and needs to be repositioned. I need to actually verify the position of the text on the screen before I encode it. Guessing and checking at 8 hours per encode just doesnt cut it :)


So here it is:

1) How do I choose a color
2) How do I position and size the text
3) How do I check to see how the subtitles look.


Thanks much in advance. I also apologize if this is common knowledge and often discussed here. If there are forum threads answering these questions, I sure couldnt find them :(

Hi-

My guess as to the reason these things haven't been discussed is that they are pretty easy to figure out on your own by fooling around. But here goes:

1.Check the Custom Colors Box, and then hit the color you want to change. Ordinarily, the color(s) with check mark(s) under it(them) is(are) transparent and not seen. The black color is the background, so you have one or two real sub colors to play with (unless you want to change the background color also). Usually they will be yellow and/or a shade of grey. But hit them to get access to the whole rainbow.

2. Ordinarily, about all you might want to do is lower the subs, so change the Y value under the red box to 35 or 40. You can't change the size unless you OCR them into another format. Putting the VobSub line of the .avs after Resize might make them a bit larger.

3. For previewing, I'll either do a Preview in GKnot, or open the .avs in VDub/Nandub and scroll around.

I hope that answers the questions, and someone correct me if I've said anything obviously stupid.
