Extract subtitles from avi

Do anyone know i can i extract the sutitles form an encoded avi (with the subtitles encoded on the video)?
It'll be very useful for me because the alternative is doing it manually and takes much time.

The question was too generic, i don't want to have the video file without subtitles but only a text ersion of the subtitles in the avi file.
I correct myself,the right question is:

Do you know an ocr program that accept an avi file in input?
