subtitles

I want to add subtitles to a svcd using winsubmux.
I multiplexed the svcd with 2 subtitles, but after I burn it I can't see or select the subtitles. I did everything the guide told me 2 do.
But when I look at the scrollmenu for the subt. it says CVD not svcd. I use Nero to burn the svcd, and I have a JVC th-a5r. Anybody who knows what to do? Or is there anything I need to change in the properties of winsubmux or Nero?

Now I'm really confused. I just tried this sample from vcdhelp.com: SVCD NTSC Sample with SVCD selectable subtitles, 2 audio tracks (BIN/CUE image) and I finally got subs. So that means my dvd player indeed plays svcd subs.Then still is my question why can't I see my subs when I made it with winsubmux? Is it maybe because I burn it with nero or what? Because I burned the .cue sample with cdr-win and it works. And why says the menudisplay always cvd, even when I tried the sample of the svcd? The sample is made by CDimager, could that be a solution?

Thanks for replying, but that was not my problem. My problem is that the test sample works but my own svcd subtitles which i added to a mpg don't. i tried several ways but no result. hope you can help me again.

I think the testfile Crzuzz used is a rather new one, 31-May-2002.
The one vcdhelp is pointing to is here

Your problem is that you commit one of the most common mistakes: using nero to create svcd disc image. Nero and other cdwriting softwares screw up the subtitles.
To properly create an svcd disc use vcdxbuild (great gui: VCDEasy) or vcdimager.

The new 'svcd_ogt_test_ntsc' sample is created by me it should work.

Like I said , the test sample worked great, but my own movies not.
I thought that I had already created the subbed mpeg with VCDImager, but I'll try it again. With VCDImager I first created the .bin file and the burned it with CDRWin. But do you also know why my dvd-player says CVD instead of SVCD? Because I tested the SVCD sample and it still said CVD.

There are currently two freeware way (as I know):
1) vcdimager
2) vcdxbuild (VCDEasy is a very good GUI for it)

My player can only play svcd subtitles if the bin/cue is created with vcdimager. If vcdxbuild is used only cvd subs are visible.

So first try vcdimager and than vcdxbuild (vcdeasy).

Here is the command line that works for me with vcdimager:

vcdimager.exe --type=svcd --add-dir=SEGMENT --cue-file=SVCD.CUE --bin-file=SVCD.BIN --iso-volume-label=SVCD --verbose SOMETHING.MPG

I did check if it's capatible, at vcdhelp.com it said it can play svcd subtitles. And so I tested the sample and it worked.

And with which proggram do you burn the .bin file?

And what about that command line, where do I have to type it in??

Burning the BIN/CUE nero is ok (I've never experienced any problem) but the good old cdrwin is the best or maybe Firestarter.

Hmmm, I've tried burning the.bin with CDRwin, but was not very lucky.
I had no result at all. The movie was good, but the subtitles weren't shown. So I'll try the following: cut a part of the movie with tmpgenc, then I use MaestroSBT for the bmp's and winsubmux to multiplex the subs. Another question about winsubmux, if I want svcd subs do I have to click the left (cvd)which is not pushed in or svcd(right) which is pushed in? And then Create a bin/cue file with VCDImager and burn it with CDRwin. If these are the correct steps I don't know what I've done wrong the times I did it before. But I'll give it another try.

Oké I've tested both ways.
With VCDImager I get no result, but with VCDEasy I get the subtitles to work. That's great, but now I've got a little problem again.First I multiplexed the whole movie with the subtitles. I got a file about 830 mb, then I made the .bin with VCDEasy. The bin file was about 841 mb, which is too large to burn with CDRwin. So I burned the .bin with Nero(overburn), but at the end of the movie my screen freezes again and again. So is there away to overburn with CDRwin?(which I think is the best programm to burn .bin's)Or is there any other way to get it done?

What is the exact size of the mpeg before and after the submuxing? And the exact file size of the bin file?

Currently I have a bin file that 845,790,960 bytes and it can be written with nero, cdrwin.

Hi,

Before multiplexing 810 mb, after 833 mb, after using VCDEasy 844 mb.
So I don't know why, but when I use overburn with Nero, my subtitles and the screen is bad. The subtitles are shown only the first 2 lines, and the screen freezes at about 10 minutes before ending. That's when I burn the .bin with Nero. So now I'm trying to burn the svcd with CDRWin 5.0 and I almost have it work, without making a .bin with VCDEasy. So I'll let you know if it totally worked.

You say WinSubMux multipelxing overhead is 23MB???
How big are these subs and how many?

Yes I really mean that.
I've cutted a small part of the svcd, about 36 mb. And when I multiplex the subtitles the file is 37 mb. And when I have the whole subbed mpg I have about +20 mb of the subtitles. The total mpg file is about 20 times as much as the cutted part. So that would be in fact 20 x 1 mb=20 mb. But I don't know what I do wrong with MaestroSBT.Is it maybe because I pick the 8 bits uncompressed?

After trying over and over I noticed a strange thing by watching the svcd.
When I pick at MaestroSBT: rendering/output resolution 720x480(mpeg2 NTSC DVD) I can't see my subtitles on the tv, but when I pick 480x480(mpeg2 NTSC SVCD) I can see them. But then, when I have long subtitles I get 4 or 5 lines each with a few words.
Are there some options I need to change for using the 720x480?
In winsubmux the subtitles are perfect in this resolution.

Again having troubles burning the whole subbed mpg file.
The first 15 minutes are great with subtitles. But then my subtitles dissapear and the screen is screwed. I think it's because the file is too big. I've got about 550 subtitles for part 1. Each of them are 112 kb. So after multiplexing the file is too big to burn it with CDRWin I think. The small part works great, but when I burn the whole movie that is where it goes wrong. Can you help me again with these questions??

I've solved some problems.

-I reduced the size of the subtitles.
I unckecked 'don't clip bitmaps' at MaestroSBT. So when I multiplexed the mpg with the subtitles, the file was just 6 mb more as the orriginal. That was also the reason why I couldn't see the subtitles at 720x480.
-So I burned the mpg file(not made a bin)and watched it. It all went good so I skipped to about 25 minutes and then the screen does strange things over and over. But the subtitles are still shown.
-Then I burned the orriginal file to see if it was because of the subtitles.And the movie was totally fine.

So is it now because I burned the mpg with CDRWin 5.0. or is it because I didn't make a bin?

Hello!

Your problem with subtitles reminds me that somebody on this forum has the same problem. It is a dvd player problem.

However you should try I-Author for multiplexing the subtitles maybe it will solve your problem.

I still don't think it's my dvdplayer, because when I made the subbed mpg that was large(using the +23 mb subs) the screen gets screwed at about 15 minutes. And when I made it with the good options(about 6 mb for the subs)the screen gets screwed at about 25 minutes. So I just think that the file is too big to burn it with CDRWin. Even in Nero the smallest SVCD file is to large to burn.How do you burn a file that is actually too large to burn in CDRWin?

1) create BIN/CUE with VCDEasy from the subbed mpeg
2) what is the exact size now of the BIN file (in bytes!)
3) burn image with Nero (nero will show the image size in time format, what time nero shows?)

2) In my documents the filesize is 830.946 kb but in the properties it says 811 mb (850.887.744 bytes)
3) When I want to burn it with nero it says 850.887.744 bytes
So I think I'll have to use overburn, but what are the exact options to use overburn without destroying the movie?

I give up. I really don't know what else to try.
Now I don't even get to cut a 3/4 of the mpg file with tmpgenc.
Because when I want it to burn it says that it is not a svcd file format.And i have selected Super Video (VBR) in tmpgenc.

Sometimes it is working if you demultiplex with tmpgenc and than mulxtiplex again (perhaps afters multipelxing you must remux subtitles)

Hey,

I didn't give up yet, just tried something out.
When I cutted the first 10 minutes, it cuts ok. And it also plays fine with the subs on my dvd player.
But when I cut a part at about 20 minutes till 30 minutes I get an error burning with CdRWin. So I just think it's the file.

So because I thought it was the file that is bad, I tried to cut the 2nd part without the endtiteling(or how do you say it). I cutted it without any problem. Now I've burned the part and I'm playing it in the dvd player. So you'll hear later on from me if it worked.

If it worked I'll try to demultiplex the 1st part and multiplex it again. Hope this works.

I've done the 2nd part perfectly. Only in the last 5 minutes the screen is sometimes a bit strange, but the rest of the part is great. Tomorrow I'll try the 1st part again.
