merging and reindexing .srt subtitle files

I have two .srt subtitle files which I need to merge into a single file and reindex. Do tools exist which can do work like this for me?

Here's a post I found doing a search How to Join 2 srt subs (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=19888&highlight=merge+AND+subtitles)

That method won't work because the timecodes on the two subtitle files I need to merge are interleaved. That is to say, it's not like that all the timecodes on the subtitles in one file are all earlier or later than the timecodes in the other file; they are all mixed up.
