How and where to position the subtitles...

First of all; I'm sorry if you have answered this question many times before... but here it goes:

Look at the picture. In my dvdrips I have the subtitles placed as in "1."... Do you think "2." would be a better place?

If so, how can I do that? The divx5-guide says: "Upon completion of the process you can position the subtitles..."
I guess I have to adjust X: & Y:, but can anyone please explain a bit. Or maybe there is a guide or something..? Do I have to make a different cropping to place the subtitles as in "2."?

BTW, I'm using Gordian Knot 0.26, and appreciate all help!

the only problem is if you are wanting to burn your subs into your video you are more then likely croping all of the black areas off of your video. And then you can't place subtitles in the black area on the bottem of the screen. you have to place them in the movie.. you can get this by 1. leaving the black area on the bottem and top and placing the subs there.
2. or using DirectVobSub during playback and use the option extend to 4:3 and have it place teh subs in the black area it creates during video playback.

Well, I'll try different types of showing subtitles.

In the meantime...
...which method do you prefer?

1. No subtitles
2. Subtitles burned in the "movie-area"
3. Subtitles burned in the "black-area" (the cropping will be different...)
4. Or as Schultz said: "Use DirectVobSub during playback and use the option extend to 4:3 and have it place teh subs in the black area it creates during video playback."

Well, the DirectVobSub method is great. I managed to place the subtitles in a black area under the movie, though I used 16:9. Where do you want me to choose 4:3, Schultz? In Gordian Knot? In Windows Media Player? Where?

you access the DirectVobSub filter properties.. if you double click on the green arrow that appears in your taskbar you can access it there.. then click the extend to 4:3 if you video is 16:9 or if you video is 4:3 you can click the extend to 16:9 to add black on the bottem to place them there..

Fantastic, this is fun! I've never created such good dvd-rips before! And subtitles with DirectVobSub... Thanks for all help!
