Re:- Adding .sub to a .divx movie

Hey guys/gals,
Im a newbie to most of this stuff here and would appreciate if someone could please let me know how can I add subtitles to a divx movie file. Heres the deal, I have this movie in french and I have a file on my hard drive with the extension ".sub" which is the subtitles to the movie. What Im interested in is, how can I add the subtitles to the movie such that when Im watching the movie, the subtitles would display whenever their is some dialogue taking place.

go to http://vobsub.edensrising.com and download the DirectVobSub package and install that.. Then just have the .sub file the same name as your movie ie
movie.avi
movie.sub

then play your movie and DirectVobSub should load (you should see a green arrow in your tray icon unless you are using Zoom Player) and it should place the subs onto your video during playback.

Thank You Schultz, that thing worked like a charm. Now, Question #2) If I burn the movie and the .sub file onto a CD-R as a data file to see the movie at someone else's house. Will I need to install the DirectVobSub program in their computer or is there a way I can permanently burn the subtitles in the divx file, hence I would not have to use this utility.

Yes you will need to install DirectVobSub onto there computer also to get it to work. You could burn them into the video but this would require reencoding of the video and would reduce the quality of the video which is not recommended.. what i would suggest is just burn the DirectVobSub installer onto the Cd with it.. So anywhere you take it with you, you can install it on there computer.. i do this with all my cds burn codecs plus stuff i need to get the file to play.

could you maybe load the video in virtualdub, add the subtitle filter, and then do a stream copy to save your new avi with the subtitles on it? I'm not sure if this will work, it's just a thought.

That won't work. Streamcopy won't save the subs inside the avi. As already said, creating permanent subs means re-encoding the avi again, so full processing mode in virtual dub.

Fantomlord, you could also consider to use BS-player as divx player. Give the avi-file and the sub-file exactly the same name, and BS-player will load the subtitles automatically when you start playing it.
