GKnot & VobSub - Subtitles Won't Display

For some reason, I cannot get subtitles to get burned into the image. I am using GKnot and I see from the different threads that I should be able to preview what the subtitles will look like. Preview doesn't show them, nor does encoding them. I'm using Divx 4, and believe I am following the GKnot/Divx4 guide to the "T."

Anyone have thoughts? I'm sure it's something I'm missing.

After trying several times again, I can get the very first subtitles to work (the subtitles for the entire movie), but can't get the others (only when characters speak non-english). The movie I am extracting is Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace, and I'm thinking it is PAL (25fps).

Also, when I use VobSub to extract just the non-english subtitles, SubAdjust 1.5.6 gives an error generating an SSA script (not sure you can tell I've tried it MANY ways now). I'm going to attempt a re-rip and see what I can do with that, but I think I'm at a dead end.

I'm having close to the same problem, using vdub with vobsub, trying to convert divx 5.02 and adding subs. I never get a preview with subs, nor can I get an encode with subs. I've tried this on two different computers, with two different versions of windows. I've also tried converting the subs to different formats to use the subtitler that comes with vdub. No subs.

DirectVobSub works for me, though.

When you rip the Subs from the dvd open them In SubResync to verify the times of the subs.. Also make sure you are selecting the right stream.. I belive Star wars has a bunch of the same streams but a few are alien only. Then the other easiest way is load the avs script that gknot creates into VirtualDub and try and see if they appear around parts.. Also when trying to convert to ssa you can use SubResync since it supports OCR detection also and out puts srt/ssa/smi etc..

Well, I know I have good subs, because when I play the original divx, directvobsub shows it with subtitles. I just hate watching stuff on my computer, and wanted to convert with tmp.

I thought this was a vdub problem, but I guess not. Glad I'm not the only one.

What version of Vobsub and what type of files where you trying to use? idx/sub, srt, ass?

I'm using idx/sub w/ VobSub v2.14. I can get the regular subtitles to work just fine. Works like a charm. Anything else (I've tried each and every other of the 7 listed, even spanish) does not work.
Some additional information: I'm wondering if the .sub I am extracting is corrupt. I played around with some settings and entries in the IDX files, basically used the IDX for the alien subtitles, but the SUB from the standard english. Turns out that the timing is perfect. The wrong subtitles are displayed, but the timing is nailed on what needs to be said where... so I'm thinking that for some reason the SUB is corrupt. Sound plausible?

Original subs are idx/sub.

Tried two versions of vobsub 2.09, and 2.014? I think, the latest version, with the latest version of vdub, after trying an older version.

Older and newer versions of directvobsub worked.

Load them into SubResync and see where they appear or if they appear at all.. if they don't then i would say that it got currupted or didn't rip them off the dvd at all.. The other thing you can do for burnt in subs, is if SubResync can see them.. then just save them as a srt or ssa script and then use the textsub.vdf file in the Vobsub install dir.. This plugins works in VDub and Avisynth and you can use it to load txt based sub files like srt or ssa. And see if it works that way..

I just tested with one of my video using the vdub and avisynth and its loading the subs just fine with 2.14. Are you trying to use Avisynth or Vdub plugin to put the subs into the video?

Also tried converting to .ssa, and using vdub subtitler plug-in, this did not work either.

I will give your suggestion a try. Thanks for your help.

In the mean time, I have cheated my way through it. Basically, I manually editted the IDX file and took out all the timestamps but the ones I needed (using the IDX from the alien rip as a referrence). It took about an hour, but got the desired effect. Glad I don't need spanish or french subtitles. :)
