VobSub problems with per chapter rip

Hi,

I ripped a movie into chapters with SmartRipper so that I could have chapter marks in the final product. The Audio and Video encoded perfectly, but the VobSub subtitles for each chapter were time based on the start of the movie and not that chapter.

I spent several hours resynching them, using a spreadsheet that had the exact time (in ms) of each chapter, then corrected for some strange "offset" between each chapter.

Additionally, the time actually RESET in the middle of one chapter, about halfway through the movie. This could be the layer switch.

There must be a better way to do subtitles when ripping by chapter. Can anyone help?

when you used vobsub to create the index ans sub files, did you use the "i've stripped my sources and crossed my fingers" 1st button or the 2nd one (i ask you this just to be sure, even if i know normally this 2nd button can't be used if you didn't rip your vobs files to be exactly the same as the ones of the dvd)?

well anyway i know a way to use vobsub and have correctly indexed subs with vobs ripped by chapters, but it doesn't work for all movies(dunno why), and maybe you already tried it:
open the vob of your first chapter in dvd2avi (which then increment automatically the next vobs until the last), then save a project for all your movie.

convert your d2v project file into a pseudo avi with VFAPIconv, and load this avi into virtualdub.

then apply the vobsub filter with the "I've stripped my...my fingers", and test the preview to see if the subs are correctly indexed.

Actually, I've tried many things. I've tried both the 'wide button' and normal button on both the original DVD and the SmartRipper output. Each way has the same problem.

There is a delay between chapters of approx. 175 - 195ms. There may also be a delay between titles, I'm not sure yet. If I can figure out a pattern I'll write some program to handle it for me.

I was thinking the same Tza. I also striped a chapter in the middle of a movie.

I then used vobsub on the ifo and the small vobfile with the chapter in and I got time code in my IDX file which was based on the whole movie.

Which said that the first sub was going to be shown about 54 min into my chapter, which is way off (the chapter is only 3 min long).

So I sync it up and it got the rigth subs for the chapter. Just the timecode was 54 min off.


Maybe Gabest can fix this in a new version. So you get the correct time code, so it gets the timecode from the vobfile ???
