subrip confused

I have a problem DVD where the subtitles are very close to each other, there is very little gap between one line and the next. Subrip keeps getting confused and thinking two lines of text are only one. I have tried adjusting the settings but all I seem to be able to do is make it ingnore one of the lines. I have attached an image showing the problem.
Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

Vobsub doesn't get confused...:D
Otherwise, just indicate the upper letter as the right one and
write the lower one in the sub file when it's finished.
That's one of the reasons why I don't use this prog anymore...

Looks like this is what it will have to be, the problem is that this happens about a hundred times. They need to be in text format so I can translate them into English.
Thanks anyway, you've confirmed my doubts that it's a problem which is not easy to get around :(
