i just updated to xp which comes with media player 8.0. is there a way i can select my subtitles like i did in media player 6.4? if not, how can i select subs at all???

You can't from WMP8, but you can from 6.4. It's stil there. Just go Start->Run->mplayer2 and enjoy :D
