To be permenant, or not to be...that is the question

Well now people have different preferences, and I have no idea what the trend is in the "subtitle" scene, but what do people prefer? Permenant subtitles? Or the ones which you can turn on and off. Personally, I'd go with the latter, but how do you do that when encoding with Gknot into divx3? Do you use that vobsub tab thingy? Or is that for permenant subs only? Should I just go with permenant?

I kinda wanna sort this out cuz I'm preparing to rip a whole load of anime DVDs into divx3 sbc or svcd (i'm not sure which is better for anime at the mo) and it would be nice if someone could shed some light on the subject :)

I choose no permanent...
for Me the video should be "clean", only the video.
and for the subs DirectVobSub 2.13 + SSA = Waiiiiiiii

I also hate permanent subs. I prefer VobSub subs as extra files (just Dutch so it won't be unnecessarily big) because you won't have the hassle of manually correcting them as I always have to do with SubRip and you get to keep italics and stuff.

It's, of course, a matter of taste but I would *never* use permanent subs. I want every bit to go into the video.
Then I do prefer to rip the subs to .srt even though it's a bit more work, but it gives me the freedom to correct the translators (sometimes) flaky english/swedish. :p

Permanent subtitles have many downsides. I will not repeat here all of them.
I prefer text based subtitle files, because of freedom to set them as you wish - font type etc. And of course you can always easy correct them.

All movies in DK are with subs unless they are in danish of course.
In this case U may get subs too if hear impaired (deaf). Some of them are with inforced subs when U buy the DVD.
The force of my own solution is moving the picture a bit and subs maybe a bit more:
I get a clean picture and the subs below. All new DVD players(stand alone) will be able to show permanent subs along with SVCD but not all are able to show subs on demand. Furthemore even if I live in a country where many ppl speak english most of them (including me) won't be able to understand many words and specially "way to say".
So: I enjoy my movies best with danish subs and so do my children, my grand children and my mother in law !:devil:

sharing with other ppl (the all world ?) is quite illegal.
The low in Denmark states:
It's legal to make copies for yourself or your "house" (family).
The copy must be made from the original, U don't have to own it (borrowed,rented or whatever)
I know of course many movies can be dl, mostly as DivX and I must admit, I dl a movie or 2 from time to time. I see them in order to decide which one I will encode later on when I get my hands on the DVD, one way or another.
If Xeo wanna share with "the rest of the world" although I'm sure this is quite illegal, the language of choice will of course be english with or without uk subs.......
