I decided to make some additions to my re-authoring of Shout! Factory's The Six Million Dollar Man release. Well, for my personal versions of the discs. The latest additions here aren't included in what I've made available to download in my prior post. Just thought I'd share what I've done. See below.
___________________

The additions I've made involve the POPUP MENUS for the bonus features. Most of the bonus features are in SD. As such, the POPUP MENU for said bonus features would need to be in SD as well and there's no real way to reach a desirable result due to this. I've tried. So originally I had mirrored what the retail discs had done, the POPUP MENU for each bonus feature including no graphics. When invoking the POPUP MENU you'd immediately be taken back where you had selected the bonus feature from. Well, the retail discs always take you back to the MAIN MENU. I don't understand why they didn't offer proper resume functionality, but I digress.

For my personal version of the discs I decided to convert all the SD (480i | 720x480 | 29.970 fps) bonus features to HD (1080i | 1920x1080 | 29.970 fps). This allowed for including a proper POPUP MENU and one that was in HD. For bonus features with shorter running times I went with a single menu button which when activated takes you back where you had selected the bonus feature from. Examples shown below for "Disc 2" of "The Reunion Films".

When bonus feature selected from MAIN MENU...
https://www.lowpro.net/blu-ray.com/menus/smdm/bd_smdm_menus_s6/bd_smdm_s6d2_pop_return_to_main_thumb.png (https://www.lowpro.net/blu-ray.com/menus/smdm/bd_smdm_menus_s6/bd_smdm_s6d2_pop_return_to_main.png)
(Click on the preview image above to view the full size image.)

When bonus feature selected from POPUP MENU of "Bionic Ever After"...
https://www.lowpro.net/blu-ray.com/menus/smdm/bd_smdm_menus_s6/bd_smdm_s6d2_pop_return_to_reunion_thumb.png (https://www.lowpro.net/blu-ray.com/menus/smdm/bd_smdm_menus_s6/bd_smdm_s6d2_pop_return_to_reunion.png)
(Click on the preview image above to view the full size image.)

For bonus features with longer running times, the "OSI Mission Defriefing" bonus features, I included a "SCENES" menu option providing direct access to a given interview segment. Examples shown below for "Disc 2" of "The Reunion Films", the bonus feature containing 16 chapters.

When bonus feature selected from MAIN MENU...
https://www.lowpro.net/blu-ray.com/menus/smdm/bd_smdm_menus_s6/bd_smdm_s6d2_pop_osi_debrief_main_thumb.png (https://www.lowpro.net/blu-ray.com/menus/smdm/bd_smdm_menus_s6/bd_smdm_s6d2_pop_osi_debrief_main.png)
(Click on the preview image above to view the full size image.)

When bonus feature selected from POPUP MENU of "Bionic Ever After"...
https://www.lowpro.net/blu-ray.com/menus/smdm/bd_smdm_menus_s6/bd_smdm_s6d2_pop_osi_debrief_reunion_thumb.png (https://www.lowpro.net/blu-ray.com/menus/smdm/bd_smdm_menus_s6/bd_smdm_s6d2_pop_osi_debrief_reunion.png)
(Click on the preview image above to view the full size image.)

And here's a look at my "OSI Mission Debriefing" POPUP MENUS for Seasons 1, 4 and 5, the bonus features having been selected from either the MAIN MENU or from the POPUP MENU of a given episode.

Season 1 "OSI Mission Defriefing" (Chapters 1-8)

Season 4 "OSI Mission Defriefing" (Chapters 16-31)

(Click on the preview image above to view the full size image.)

Season 5 "OSI Mission Defriefing" (Chapters 1-16)

(Click on the preview image above to view the full size image.)

Season 5 "OSI Mission Defriefing" (Chapters 17-32)

When accessing the "SCENES" menu option the current chapter (...value of PSR5) is selected by default. Navigating up from the topmost item wraps around to the last item on the current page. Navigating left/right takes you to the other page if applicable. Navigating down from the last item on a given page takes you back to the first level of the POPUP MENU, the "SCENES" menu option being selected.

I authored the latest season of this TV series to Blu-ray today. End result shown below.

(Blu-ray menu graphics confined to aspect ratio of presentation to accomodate my protector screen masking.)

The above is a basic "Quick-Play" menu which I refined after the fact using BDedit. Turned out pretty good I think.

In any event, just thought I'd share. Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night. ;)

I'm currently in the process of authoring the TV series, "Bones" to Blu-ray. Well, the seasons that never received a Blu-ray release.

Pics of the Blu-ray menus for Seasons 1, 2, 3 and 9 shown below. Only have seasons 10-12 to go. In any event, just thought I'd share. Until next time. ;)

I just finished cataloging and authoring the latest season of "The Blacklist (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2741602/)" to Blu-ray. Thought I'd share the end result.

(The cover art for the back portion is just temporary. I'll be working up a proper back cover this weekend. The fun never ends!)

These aren't "Quick-Play" menus obviously. It had been a while since I created a proper Top Menu and Popup Menu, so I decided why not. Enjoying checking it out.

I authored the first 12 episodes of "NCIS: Season 20" to Blu-ray the other day. In this case I went with 6 episodes per disc. To spice things up I decided to try my hand at replicating a common Blu-ray menu layout used by Studio Distribution Services. Turned out exceptionally well. Screenshots of the Top Menu and Popup Menu for Disc 1 provided below. Thought some might enjoy checking them out. ;)

I decided to knock out the rest of the Blu-ray menus this week for the TV series, "Bones". Just have Seasons 11 and 12 left to do. Thought I'd share the end result for Season 10. Eye candy provided below.

Top Menu:
https://www.lowpro.net/blu-ray.com/menus/bones/bd_menu_bones_s10d1_thumb.png (https://www.lowpro.net/blu-ray.com/menus/bones/bd_menu_bones_s10d1.png)

Popup Menu:
https://www.lowpro.net/blu-ray.com/menus/bones/bd_menu_bones_s10d1_pop_thumb.png (https://www.lowpro.net/blu-ray.com/menus/bones/bd_menu_bones_s10d1_pop.png)

And just for fun I added a hidden "Play All" option in addition to "Resume" functionality. The "Play All" option is accessed by navigating "Right" at any time. Pressing "OK" when selected toggles the option "On/Off". Navigating "Left" takes you back to your previous selection. And no, this isn't the traditional "Play All" option. It simply determines what happens when a given episode finishes playing. If the "Play All" option is "On" the next episode immediately plays, otherwise you're taken back to the Top Menu instead.

Top Menu:
https://www.lowpro.net/blu-ray.com/menus/bones/bd_menu_bones_s10d1_playall_thumb.png (https://www.lowpro.net/blu-ray.com/menus/bones/bd_menu_bones_s10d1_playall.png)

Popup Menu:
https://www.lowpro.net/blu-ray.com/menus/bones/bd_menu_bones_s10d1_pop_playall_thumb.png (https://www.lowpro.net/blu-ray.com/menus/bones/bd_menu_bones_s10d1_pop_playall.png)

Last but not least, the "Resume" functionality. Let's say I'm watching "Episode 1". During playback of "Episode 1" I return to the Main Menu via the Top Menu function of my Blu-ray player remote. If I select "Episode 1" at that point the below prompt is given providing for playing "Episode 1" from the beginning or resuming "Episode 1" where I had left off. The "Resume Playback" option is selected by default in case.

https://www.lowpro.net/blu-ray.com/menus/bones/bd_menu_bones_s10d1_resume_01_thumb.png (https://www.lowpro.net/blu-ray.com/menus/bones/bd_menu_bones_s10d1_resume_01.png)

If I select one of the other episodes instead a similar prompt is given, the "Begin Playback" option being selected by default. In the below example I'm able to resume playback of "Episode 1", but have selected "Episode 2". The prompt in this case provides for playing "Episode 2" from the beginning or resuming playback of "Episode 1".

https://www.lowpro.net/blu-ray.com/menus/bones/bd_menu_bones_s10d1_resume_02_thumb.png (https://www.lowpro.net/blu-ray.com/menus/bones/bd_menu_bones_s10d1_resume_02.png)

Also, the hidden "Play All" option can be accessed from the above prompts as well. Navigating "Right" at any time provides for accessing the option. Navigating "Left" from there takes you back to your previous selection. Are we having fun yet? :p

I imported this Blu-ray release from Germany a few weeks ago. Just for fun I decided to re-author the Blu-ray's creating a "Region A" version of the release where "English" takes precedent over "German" throughout. I just finished completing my work on Season 1. Thought I'd share the end result. Enjoy checking it out!

So on first playback the "English" audio is enabled by default now, all "German" text replaced with "English" text throughout the menus. This includes the video that plays in the background as I wanted the static portions of the video on the left side to mirror the changes I had made. Updating the video used for the Top Menu was easier than one might think. In Photoshop I had already created an image that represented what I wanted the static portions of the video to look like. As such, I just made sure no layers were visible that represented the "Selected" or "Activated" states of the various menu buttons, then saving the image (1920x1080) as a transparent PNG. See below.

https://www.lowpro.net/doom9.org/menus/kr40ae/kr40ae_menu_s1d1_99000_overlay_thumb.png

From there I re-encoded the video overlaying the above PNG in the process. This is what was done when creating the original video. I used FFmpeg in this case and was careful to ensure the quality of the original video and transparent PNG were retained in the process. The end result looks fantastic. And speaking of end results, Top Menu pictured below in addition to a pic of the menu displayed when initiating playback of an episode that includes audio commentary.

https://www.lowpro.net/doom9.org/menus/kr40ae/kr40ae_menu_s1d1_99000_episodes_thumb.jpg (https://www.lowpro.net/doom9.org/menus/kr40ae/kr40ae_menu_s1d1_99000_episodes.jpg)
(Top Menu pics for Disc 2 (https://www.lowpro.net/doom9.org/menus/kr40ae/kr40ae_menu_s1d2_99000_episodes.jpg), Disc 3 (https://www.lowpro.net/doom9.org/menus/kr40ae/kr40ae_menu_s1d3_99000_episodes.jpg), Disc 4 (https://www.lowpro.net/doom9.org/menus/kr40ae/kr40ae_menu_s1d4_99000_episodes.jpg) and Disc 5 (https://www.lowpro.net/doom9.org/menus/kr40ae/kr40ae_menu_s1d5_99000_episodes.jpg).)

https://www.lowpro.net/doom9.org/menus/kr40ae/kr40ae_menu_s1d1_00011_commentary_thumb.jpg (https://www.lowpro.net/doom9.org/menus/kr40ae/kr40ae_menu_s1d1_00011_commentary.jpg)
(Click on the preview image above to view the full size image.)

The "Audio Commentary" prompt shown above uses its own title and playlist. To spice things up I included it within the Top Menu instead positioning it within the center of the display depicted to the right. The portion of the video appearing within the display was made to look darker calling more attention to the prompt as a result.

https://www.lowpro.net/doom9.org/menus/kr40ae/kr40ae_menu_s1d1_99000_commentary_thumb.jpg (https://www.lowpro.net/doom9.org/menus/kr40ae/kr40ae_menu_s1d1_99000_commentary.jpg)
(Click on the preview image above to view the fill size image.)

The Popup Menu turned out great as well. It was a bit more challenging than the Top Menu actually. Well, the transparency. It took some real finesse to get the transparency nice and smooth across the top from left to right there as I wasn't working with the original image. Turned out better than I thought it would so.

https://www.lowpro.net/doom9.org/menus/kr40ae/kr40ae_menu_s1d1_99001_episodes_thumb.jpg (https://www.lowpro.net/doom9.org/menus/kr40ae/kr40ae_menu_s1d1_99001_episodes.jpg)
(Popup Menu pics for Disc 2 (https://www.lowpro.net/doom9.org/menus/kr40ae/kr40ae_menu_s1d2_99001_episodes.jpg), Disc 3 (https://www.lowpro.net/doom9.org/menus/kr40ae/kr40ae_menu_s1d3_99001_episodes.jpg), Disc 4 (https://www.lowpro.net/doom9.org/menus/kr40ae/kr40ae_menu_s1d4_99001_episodes.jpg) and Disc 5 (https://www.lowpro.net/doom9.org/menus/kr40ae/kr40ae_menu_s1d5_99001_episodes.jpg).)

Just like the Top Menu, the "Audio Commentary" prompt for the Popup Menu was included within the Popup Menu rather than using a separate title and playlist. To increase the fun factor I'm having the main part of the Popup Menu slide down out of view, the "Audio Commentary" prompt then being displayed. I also give you the option of backing out of the prompt if you change your mind. This is done by navigating down from any of the subtitle options. When backing out the prompt disappears taking you back where you had come from, the main part of the Popup Menu sliding back up into view.

https://www.lowpro.net/doom9.org/menus/kr40ae/kr40ae_menu_s1d1_99001_commentary_thumb.jpg (https://www.lowpro.net/doom9.org/menus/kr40ae/kr40ae_menu_s1d1_99001_commentary.jpg)

Additional enhancements...

1. Resume functionality added.
The original discs do not provide for resuming playback. Well, at least for Season 1. I haven't checked the other discs yet. Naturally I couldn't let that stand so proper "Resume" functionality has been added throughout covering all usage scenarios. The image below shows what the prompt looks like, the episode in question being called out to the left of the prompt.

https://www.lowpro.net/doom9.org/menus/kr40ae//kr40ae_menu_s1d1_99000_resume_thumb.jpg (https://www.lowpro.net/doom9.org/menus/kr40ae/kr40ae_menu_s1d1_99000_resume.jpg)
(Click on the preview image above to view the fill size image.)

The above prompt is displayed when playback of the selected episode can be resumed. This includes when invoking the "Auto Cruise" (Play All) option. Choosing "No" results in the selected episode playing from the beginning. In the case of the "Auto Cruise" (Play All) option the first episode on the disc would play from the beginning. If the episode in question includes audio commentary the "Audio Commentary" prompt immediately follows the "Resume" prompt. Navigating down from the bottom most selections of either prompt provides for backing out if you decide you don't want to play the selected episode.

But wait, there's more! The "Resume" prompt is used with the Popup Menu as well. The prompt is part of the Popup Menu just as is the case with the "Commentary Prompt", no separate title and playlist needed. The prompt provides for a few things from the Popup Menu. It's integrated with both the "Audio Commentary" prompt and "Auto Cruise" (Play All) option.

https://www.lowpro.net/doom9.org/menus/kr40ae//kr40ae_menu_s1d1_99001_resume_thumb.jpg (https://www.lowpro.net/doom9.org/menus/kr40ae/kr40ae_menu_s1d1_99001_resume.jpg)
(Click on the preview image above to view the fill size image.)

The "Resume" prompt is displayed anytime an "Episode" button is "Activated", the episode in question including audio commentary. This provides for accessing the "Audio Commentary" prompt and having playback continue or start from the beginning once making your selections.

The "Resume" prompt also provides for enabling the "Auto Cruise" (Play All) option without having to restart playback from the first of the episodes. "Activating" the "Auto Cruise" (Play All) button always results in the "Resume" prompt being displayed. Choosing "Yes" enables the option continuing playback of the current episode. Choosing "No" enables the option, the first of the episodes playing from the beginning.

And one last usage scenario, disabling the "Auto Cruise" (Play All) option. This is done by "Activating" the "Episode" button for the current episode while the "Auto Cruise" (Play All) option is enabled. When doing so the "Resume" prompt is displayed. Choosing "Yes" disables the "Auto Cruise" (Play All) option, the current episode continuing to play. Choosing "No" disables the option, playback of the current episode starting over from the beginning.

2. Enhanced Top Menu behavior and navigation.
• Navigating up from the first "Episode" button wraps around to the "Auto Cruise" (Play All) button and vice versa.
• Navigating left from any of the "Episode" buttons takes you to the "Auto Cruise" (Play All) button. Navigating left from the "Auto Cruise" (Play All) button takes you to the "Episode" buttons, the button for the current episode being "Selected".
• Navigating right from any of the "Episode" buttons or "Auto Cruise" (Play All) button takes you to the "Audio" buttons, the button for the last primary audio track enabled being "Selected".
• Navigating up from the first "Audio" button wraps around to the last "Subtitle" button and vice versa.
• Activating an "Audio" button takes you to the "Subtitle" buttons, the button for the last primary subtitle track enabled being "Selected". If primary subtitles had been disabled the "Off" subtitle button is "Selected" instead.
• Activating a "Subtitle" button takes you to the "Episode" buttons, the button for the current episode being "Selected".
• Navigating left from any of the "Audio/Subtitle" buttons takes you to the "Episode" buttons, the button for the current episode being "Selected".
• Navigating right from any of the "Audio" buttons results in the same navigation that takes place when "Activating" one of the "Audio" buttons.
• Navigating right from any of the "Subtitle" buttons results in the same navigation that takes place when navigating right from one of the "Episode" buttons or "Auto Cruise (Play All)" button.
• When activating an "Episode" button, if playback can be resumed the "Resume" prompt is displayed, the "Selected/Activated" state of the "Episode" button still being displayed (https://www.lowpro.net/doom9.org/menus/kr40ae/kr40ae_menu_s1d1_99000_resume_e03.jpg).
• When activating the "Auto Cruise" (Play All) button, if playback can be resumed the "Resume" prompt is displayed, the "Selected/Activated" state of the "Auto Cruise" (Play All) button still being displayed, the episode in question lighting up on the screen (https://www.lowpro.net/doom9.org/menus/kr40ae/kr40ae_menu_s1d1_99000_playall_resume_e03.jpg) above the "Auto Cruise (Play All)" button. The yellow portion of the "Episode" button continues to show its "Normal" state. If choosing "No" to the "Resume" prompt, the first of the episodes is played. If the first of the episodes includes audio commentary the audio commentary prompt is displayed, the episode in question lighting up on the screen (https://www.lowpro.net/doom9.org/menus/kr40ae/kr40ae_menu_s1d1_99000_playall_commentary.jpg) above the "Auto Cruise" (Play All) button. The yellow portion of the "Episode" button continues to show its "Normal" state.
• Navigating down from the bottom most selections of the "Audio Commentary" and "Resume" prompts provides for backing out in case you changed your mind. None of your selections prior to backing out are applied.

3. Enhanced Popup Menu behavior and navigation.
• When the menu is initially displayed the button of the current episode is "Selected". If the "Auto Cruise" (Play All) option is enabled its button is "Selected" instead.
• Navigating down from any of the "Episode" buttons takes you to the "Main Menu" button. If the "Auto Cruise" (Play All) option is enabled its button is "Selected" instead.
• Navigating right from the "Main Menu" button wraps around to the first "Audio" button and vice versa.
• Navigating down from any of the "Audio" buttons or "Auto Cruise" (Play All) button takes you to the "Subtitle" buttons, the button for the last primary subtitle track enabled being "Selected". If primary subtitles had been disabled the "Off" subtitle button is "Selected" instead.
• Navigating down from any of the "Subtitle" buttons or "Main Menu" button takes you to the "Audio" buttons, the button for the last primary audio track enabled being "Selected".
• The sound clips played from the Top Menu for "Audio" and "Subtitle" selection are played from the Popup Menu as well.
• When activating an "Episode" button the Popup Menu slides down out of view, a prompt then being displayed if applicable prior to the selected episode playing. When playback begins the "Auto Cruise" (Play All) option is disabled.
• If an "Episode" button is "Activated" for an episode not playing and the episode includes a commentary track the audio commentary prompt is displayed, playback starting from the beginning of the episode once a subtitle selection is made. Navigating down from the bottom most selections provides for backing out if you've changed your mind.
• If the "Episode" button is "Activated" for the current episode and the episode includes audio commentary, the "Resume" prompt is displayed. Choosing "Yes" displays the audio commentary prompt, the Popup Menu being turned off when a subtitle selection is made. Choosing "No" displays the audio commentary prompt as well, playback starting over from the beginning once a subtitle selection is made. Navigating down from the bottom most selections of either prompt provides for backing out if you've changed your mind. In this case any "Audio" selection made is retained as the "Audio" selection is executed in real-time.

4. Audio, Subtitles and the Audio Commentary prompt.
Audio Commentary "On/Off" options apply to audio selection only. Those options and the subtitle options are treated as an extension of the primary audio/subtitle options, but at the same time treated separately. This provides for retaining your primary audio/subtitle selections while at the same time having the ability to mix and match as if audio/subtitle selection for audio commentary was available right along side the primary audio/subtitle options. One could for instance listen to the audio commentary while having one of the primary subtitle tracks turned on. One could also listen to one of the primary audio tracks while having one of the commentary subtitle tracks turned on. Whatever combination one desires is possible.

So here's how it works in practice. When navigating between the "Audio" and "Subtitle" commentary options the current "Audio" and "Subtitle" tracks are "Selected" by default. So if the current "Audio" playing is one of the primary audio tracks the "Off" button will be "Selected" by default, otherwise the "On" button is "Selected". Navigating down to the commentary subtitle options follows the same rule. If the current "Subtitle" playing is one of the primary subtitles or if subtitles are disabled the "Off" button is "Selected" by default, otherwise the particular commentary subtitle button is "Selected".

If the commentary audio track is playing and the "Off" button is activated the last primary audio track in use is played. If the "English" or "Deutsch" buttons are activated, the given commentary subtitle is played. If the "Subtitles\Off" button is activated the last primary subtitle in use is played. If primary subtitles were disabled that remains to be the case. If audio and/or subtitle commentary is playing and an episode is selected that doesn't include audio commentary, in that case the last primary audio/subtitle selections are played. This applies when going from episode to episode via the "Auto Cruise" (Play All) option as well.

Another day, another title authored to Blu-ray which has yet to see an official Blu-ray release. I own the "Titan A.E.: Special Edition" DVD release. Just couldn't bring myself to give the DVD another spin, so I decided to roll my own while (not so) patiently awaiting a Blu-ray release. Thought I'd share the end result with everyone. Enjoy checking it out!

As seen from My Movies for Windows Media Center...

(Click on the image above to view my online profile for this title.)

I "purchased" the AmazonPrime offering (1080p/23.976 | 23.9 Mbps | 2.35:1 | DD+ 2.0 224Kbps) in this case carrying over the PlayListMarks (Chapters) and Audio (DTS 5.1, DD 5.1, DD 2.0 Director's Commentary) from the DVD. I included English and English SDH subtitles as well.

(A delay of -1000ms was required for each of the DVD audio tracks carried over, i.e. so that the audio was in sync with the video.)

And below are some screenshots of the Blu-ray menu I created for this, proper "Resume" functionality provided throughout, the chapter names and thumbnails for the "SCENES" menu option mirroring what was done for the DVD.

(Only the Top Menu is shown below. The Popup Menu is identical to the Top Menu minus the static menu background.)

(When activating the "PLAY" option the above prompt is displayed, the options given to play the movie with or without audio commentary. Selecting and activating the "Commentary" option sets the audio stream accordingly, then starting playback of the film. Selecting and activating the "Commentary Off" option restores the previous non-commentary stream that was selected, then starting playback of the film. WOW!! My favorite series!!
You are so damn good at this, a true Pro, amazing aesthetics!
How I wish I could do this…Thanks for the kind words and sounds like I made a good choice. I haven't watched the TV series before. I continue to hear good things so. As for the Blu-ray's, each episode contains a primary subtitle track. (Subtitles are turned off by default.) There are a number of episodes across the series which contain forced subtitles however. In those cases there's a second subtitle track just for the forced subtitles. Using BDedit I added additional navigation commands prior to the episodes in question playing. The commands check to see if subtitles are turned on. If subtitles are turned on no action is taken. If subtitles are turned off the second subtitle track is enabled, the forced subtitle track. If the second subtitle track is enabled and I go to play an episode which contains only the primary subtitle track, in that case the player enables the primary subtitle track since there's no second subtitle track. To prevent that from happening I added a second subtitle track to the STN table of the given playlist. As a result, the second subtitle track remains enabled when making the transition even if there really isn't one. Problem solved.

Another day, another TV series authored to Blu-ray. Went with basic Quick-Play menus once again replacing the graphics for the menu buttons after the fact using BDedit. I mirrored the episode breakdown per disc used by the DVD releases in this case. Each season is spread across 3 discs, 2 of the discs for each season being BD50's. End result shown below for those interested in checking it out. ;)

I purchased this TV series yesterday authoring the first 12 episodes to Blu-ray. End result shown below for those interested in checking it out.

I repurposed the Blu-ray menus I created for Season 9 in this case. (See here (https://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?p=1981891#post1981891).) Season 10 has the same number of episodes so. Took me less than an hour from start to finish. Gotta love it! ;)

I recently authored the TV Series, "Gilligan's Island" to Blu-ray. Prior to burning to disc I added a cool enhancement. Thought I'd share what I did with everyone. ;)

The Top Menu for each Blu-ray now offers 2 different layouts. Navigating left or right at any time from the Top Menu provides for toggling between each layout. By default the 1.78:1 layout is used shown below.

https://www.lowpro.net/doom9.org/menus/gi/bd_menu_gi_s1d1_thumb.png (https://www.lowpro.net/doom9.org/menus/gi/bd_menu_gi_s1d1.png)
(Additional Blu-ray Menus: Disc 2 (https://www.lowpro.net/doom9.org/menus/gi/bd_menu_gi_s1d2.png), Disc 3 (https://www.lowpro.net/doom9.org/menus/gi/bd_menu_gi_s1d3.png))

I'll be using the above layout when watching on the plasma display in my home office. When using the front projector I'll be physically masking my 1.78:1 projector screen down to 1.33:1. When the masking is in place I'll be using the 1.33:1 layout shown below instead. :p

(Additional Blu-ray Menus: Disc 2 (https://www.lowpro.net/doom9.org/menus/gi/bd_menu_gi_s1d2_alt.png), Disc 3 (https://www.lowpro.net/doom9.org/menus/gi/bd_menu_gi_s1d3_alt.png))

I authored Season 1 of this TV series to Blu-ray yesterday. The video wasn't in HD, but was at 24 fps. It scaled up quite nicely I must say, i.e. 1440x1080 matted to 1920x1080. Looks surprisingly good projected at 123" diagonal. Eye candy provided below for your viewing pleasure. ;)

(Navigating down from the last item on Page 2 takes you to the first item on Page 1. Navigating up from the first item on Page 2 takes you to the last item on Page 1.)

I included a 1.33:1 menu layout as well just as I did for "Gilligan's Island" per my prior post. See below.

(The "Setup" options are accessed by navigating "Right" at any time, then navigating "Up/Down" to access the given option. Pressing "OK" toggles your selection "On/Off". Navigating "Left" takes you back to your previous selection. And no, the "Play All" option does not follow the traditional implementation. It simply determines what happens when a given episode finishes playing. If the "Play All" option is "On" the next episode immediately plays, otherwise you're taken back to the Top Menu instead.)

RESUME:

(Playback of the selected episode begins immediately if there's no resume point. If there's a resume point the above prompt is given instead, the "Resume Playback" option being selected by default if the episode selected is the same episode that can be resumed.)

https://www.lowpro.net/doom9.org/menus/virginian/bd_menu_virginian_top_s1d1_resume02_thumb.png (https://www.lowpro.net/doom9.org/menus/virginian/bd_menu_virginian_top_s1d1_resume02.png)
(The resume prompt is always displayed if there's a resume point available. In the above example playback of "Episode 1" can be resumed. Selecting "Begin Playback" starts playback of "Episode 3" from the beginning. Selecting "Resume Playback" resumes playback of "Episode 1". In this scenario "Begin Playback" is selected by default.)

__________________________________

An added note regarding the "SETUP" option if I may. When implementing this is decided to keep track of the current selection, irrespective of whether you're on the TOP MENU or POPUP MENU. If the "PLAY ALL" option is currently selected for example, i.e. the option is highlighted giving you the ability to turn it on or off. When leaving, then returning to the "SETUP" option the "PLAY ALL" option will still be selected. Same for the "SUBTITLE" option. This is especially useful when accessing the "SETUP" option from the POPUP MENU which also remembers which menu page you were last on, episode selection and the setup options being separate menu pages. This provides for quickly accessing the POPUP MENU to turn subtitles on or off for example. I turn subtitles on and remove the POPUP MENU while on the SETUP page. I return to the POPUP MENU and am taken to the SETUP page, the "SUBTITLE" option still selected. I turn subtitles off and remove the POPUP MENU. Doesn’t get much easier than that. Yes, I could use the "SUBTITLE" button on my remote control instead but what fun would that be. :p

I started authoring the TV series, "Homicide Hunter" to Blu-ray today. Just completed Season 1. I repurposed one of the Blu-ray menus I created for "The Virginian" in this case. Thought I'd share the end result. See below. ;)

EPISODE SELECTION:

(The current episode is selected by default. Navigating up from the first item wraps around to the last item and vice versa. When activating an item a prompt is displayed if playback can be resumed, the options given to "Begin Playback" of the selected episode or "Resume Playback" from where you left off.)

SETUP:
https://www.lowpro.net/doom9.org/menus/homicide_hunter/bd_menu_homicide_hunter_s1_top_setup_thumb.png (https://www.lowpro.net/doom9.org/menus/homicide_hunter/bd_menu_homicide_hunter_s1_top_setup.png)

RESUME:
https://www.lowpro.net/doom9.org/menus/homicide_hunter/bd_menu_homicide_hunter_s1_top_resume01_thumb.png (https://www.lowpro.net/doom9.org/menus/homicide_hunter/bd_menu_homicide_hunter_s1_top_resume01.png)
(Playback of the selected episode begins immediately if there's no resume point. If there's a resume point the above prompt is given instead, the "Resume Playback" option being selected by default if the episode selected is the same episode that can be resumed.)

https://www.lowpro.net/doom9.org/menus/homicide_hunter/bd_menu_homicide_hunter_s1_top_resume02_thumb.png (https://www.lowpro.net/doom9.org/menus/homicide_hunter/bd_menu_homicide_hunter_s1_top_resume02.png)

Hi Lowpro, I have a rather dummy question regarding the BD-RB "quick-play backup" option, which I am sure you would have checked out a while back, before you took the level of menu creation/editing to a vastly new sexy level... but if you can advise me on probably this simple question about that option.

I am firstly trying to get BD-RB to create/author a BD-25 containing two titles (total size 19.5gb).
1.Following threads found here I set BD-RB to quick-play backup.
2. Select the two .mkv files.
3. BD-RB scans the files and does it stuff.
4. the resultant iso outputted by BD-RB displayed on VLC shows the 'space' menu background and nothing else, no text. Clicking anywhere makes no diff.
5. On the VLC menu Tools\Codec info shows a list of titles on the iso, the contents show only one title (video+audio+subs)
that's it....
Any idea what I am doing wrong..!?
Cheers CD

Hi again... I got it sorted.. as you no doubt thought, I didn't have java installed correctly... all fine now..
Q. did you do much playing with the menu options inside BD-RB, or did you go straight to your higher level of menu design..?
I doubt I will have the time to ever get as sophisticated as that..
perhaps a motion menu background.?!

Anyway cheers for offering any advise.. CD

And yes, my trip down the Blu-ray authoring rabbit hole all began with BD Rebuilder and the Quick-Play feature. I played around with BD Rebuilder's Quick-Play related menu options and hidden options quite a bit. Longing for more control and the ability to customize my Blu-ray's further I started editing my BD Rebuilder based Blu-ray's after the fact using BDedit. Little by little I started to put it all together and now have a fairly comprehensive understanding of the Blu-ray format. Well, HDMV based Blu-ray's anyway. I still create Quick-Play menus from time to time, but my preference is to create Blu-ray menus using Photoshop, PNG Quantizer and BDedit in combination with other tools as needed. ;)

Thanks for the reply, Quick Q... how much mucking around is it to achieve a video background instead of the default space image.?

Q#2.. have you been able to see/use BD menus from a BD ISO file?

Lowpro

Thanks for the reply, Quick Q... how much mucking around is it to achieve a video background instead of the default space image.?
Well, the default space image is a video background. BD Rebuilder uses that image by default encoding a .5 second video of the image.

You can direct BD Rebuilder to use a different image by adding the "MENU_BACKGROUND" hidden option to your BDREBUILDER.INI file.

(EXAMPLE: "MENU_BACKGROUND=C:\Users\AlienM15x\Documents\AnyStream\AS_HOMICIDE_HUNTER\IMAGES\BACKGROUNDS\S7\HOMICIDE_HUNTER_S7D1.png")

That being said, you can replace that .5 second video with any video that you'd like outside of BD Rebuilder. I've outlined the steps below.

STEP 1: Take the video you'd like to use for your menu background and author it to Blu-ray as if it were a single movie (TITLE 1).

STEP 2: Open the resulting Blu-ray in BDedit (INSTANCE A) navigating to the PLAYLIST tab and selecting the playlist for TITLE 1. (Keep this instance of BDedit open as you'll be referencing it later.)

STEP 3: Take a copy of the M2TS and CLPI files for TITLE 1 renaming them "99001.m2ts" and "99001.clpi". (This is the naming convention used by BD Rebuilder for the menu background.)

STEP 4: Take the renamed files from Step 3 and place them in the STREAM and CLIPINF folders of the Blu-ray containing the Quick-Play menu overwriting the original files.

STEP 5: Launch a second instance of BDedit (INSTANCE B) and open the Blu-ray containing the Quick-Play menu navigating to the PLAYLIST tab and viewing the playlist for the TOP MENU. (If the Blu-ray contains 2 titles for example, the playlist for the TOP MENU would be "00003.mpls".)

STEP 6: From BDedit (INSTANCE B) edit the MPLS file for the TOP MENU. Edit the "IN time" and "OUT time" values for the single Playlist Item (id 0) so that they match the values seen in the first instance of BDedit (INSTANCE A). Do the same for the single PlayListMark (id 0), then saving your changes.

STEP 7: If you want the video to play more than once just add duplicate instances of the PlayItem, then saving your changes. This is done by selecting the PlayItem (id 0) and pressing the "Insert" button on your keyboard. Hold the "Insert" button down to add duplicate PlayItems multiple times in rapid succession. A total of 998 PlayItems are supported per playlist. (The "Insert" function may or may not perform as I described based on the version of BDedit you're using.)

Q#2.. have you been able to see/use BD menus from a BD ISO file?Yes, but only after mounting the ISO using Virtual CloneDrive (freeware) which is available for download here (https://www.redfox.bz/download.html).

Hi there Lowpro.. checking the menu created by BD-RB on powerDVD 12, it shows three choices but there are only two movie titles in the disc..
there are only FOUR files in the STREAM folder and again FOUR files in the CLIPINF.

Do you know why?
cheers again CD

UPDATE...

I created another 'test' BD folder structure and this time it turned out as expected, two titles onloy, so no idea what happened earlier..

Anyway the editing of the BDMV folders for the second 'test' disc, following your instructions, worked perfectly. So a BIG THANK YOU for your advice.
It looks involved on paper, but having done it once it becomes logical/understandable..

Now I will get around to making a motion background 'Generic', as well as some special ones for certain compilation discs.
My plan [at the moment] is to keep the menu text buttons, disc title and positioning set up by BD-RB quick-play menu creation process, and just change the background, as desired.
I am assuming that the colour and size of that text is adjustable by the settings in BD-RB somewhere, hidden. Can you advise on that.?

Q. Do you know if there is a size limitation on the space used by the menu background.?

So here's looking forward to a nice little project, and all thanks to your initiative.. Cheers CD

P.S. I wonder if the third menu item in my previous email/image, was the menu background, based on the duration displayed.[00.00.00.542]..!

There's no size limit... but with BD-RB the amount used for menu background is subtracted from the space made available for the actual movie/series.

Usually when a short "extra" like that shows up it is related to the setting of MIN_PLAYLIST_MINS or MIN_M2TS_SIZE.

Hi there jdobbs
Thanks for the clarification on those two points..
and thanks to you for creating this gem, at the start, and continuing to provide support after all these years.

There are a number of hidden options available for the Quick-Play feature. You add them to your "BDREBUILDER.INI" file if not already present and set the desired values for each. See below.

From the "HIDDENOPTIONS.TXT" file...
MENU_ACTIVE_COLOR=s | s = YELLOW/BLUE/GREEN/RED/PURPLE/WHITE, Color of active text in menu, default is GREEN
MENU_BACKDROP_AUTOSIZE=n | n= 0/1 - 0=Off (default), if set to 1, the menu backdrop automatically sized to match items
MENU_BACKDROP_OPACITY=n | n = 0-255 - Opacity of the Quick-Menu backdrop 0=Transparent, 255=solid, default = 150
MENU_CUSTOM_COLOR=n | n = Custom RGB color. Example: 0x40FF40 (hexadecimal: BBGGRR) or 4259632 (decimal)
MENU_FONT=s | s = Any legal font name supported on your computer. Font used for Quick menus. default=Arial
MENU_FONT_BOLD=n | n = 0/1 - 0=OFF (default) - if set to "1", then the selected menu font is set to boldface
MENU_FONT_ITALIC=n | n = 0/1 - 0=OFF (default) - if set to "1", then the selected menu font is set to italic
MENU_FORCE_QUICK=n | n = 0/1 - 0=OFF (default) - if set to "1", create Quick menu even for only one play item
MENU_HORIZONTAL=n | n = 0-1919 - Offset from left of 1080p screen for QP menu item selection area (16 items/page max)
MENU_INACTIVE_COLOR=s | s = YELLOW/BLUE/GREEN/RED/PURPLE/WHITE, Color of inactive text, defaults to subdued white
MENU_ITEMS_PAGE=n[,n...] | n = Items for each page of a quick menu/import. 4 page example: MENU_ITEMS_PAGE=13,5,12,8
MENU_MAXITEMS=n | n = 2-64 - Maximum number of menu items per Quick-Menu page. Default = 32
MENU_PAGE_ENABLE=n | n = 0/1 - 1=ON (default) - if set to "0", Menu Page number text will not be displayed
MENU_PREVNEXT_X=n | n = 0-1919 - 0=Automatic (default), X position for PREV/NEXT page menu button
MENU_PREVNEXT_Y=n | n = 0-1079 - 0=Automatic (default), Y position for PREV/NEXT page menu button
MENU_ROLLOVER=n | n = 0/1 - 0=OFF (default) Set to "1" = Quick-Menu: "up" on item #1 rolls to last and vise versa
MENU_TOP=n | n = 100-910 - Offset from top of 1080p screen for QP menu item selection area, default = 200
MENU_VERTICAL=n | n = 100-910 - Same as MENU_TOP - if both are used, MENU_TOP has priority

*A specific color RGB may also be specified such as 0x40FF40 -- see MENU_CUSTOM_COLOR,
For MENU_INACTIVE_COLOR: "SAME" is a subdued version of MENU_ACTIVE_COLOR.

Do you know if there is a size limitation on the space used by the menu background?

You could have a feature length film be your menu background if you wanted. The menu background is just a video, the graphics for the Top Menu appearing on top of it.

Lately I've been creating my own videos to use with the Top Menu rather than generating one with BD Rebuilder. I take my static image (PNG) and create a 66 second video (MP4) of the image using FFMPEG. (Example: ffmpeg -framerate 30 -loop 1 -i homicide_hunter_s9d1.png -t 66 -c:v libx264 -crf 0 homicide_hunter_s9d1.mp4) I then import the MP4 to BD Rebuilder and author it to Blu-ray. From there I take the resulting M2TS file and import it to multiAVCHD authoring to Blu-ray trimming the video down to 60 seconds. I trim off the first five seconds (Cut start: 5) and the last second (Cut end: 65). This ensures the video plays cleaning from start to finish. I then incorporate the resulting M2TS/CLPI file into the Blu-ray I'm working on updating the playlist for the TOP MENU as I described in my prior post. In this case though I insert 997 duplicate copies of the PlayItem within the playlist once edited. This gives the illusion that the video is playing on a loop. :p

I wonder if the third menu item in my previous email/image, was the menu background, based on the duration displayed. [00.00.00.542]
Ding, ding, ding, ding. We have a winner! That's precisely what it was.

It just dawned on me, the earlier reply from the Boss. About the duration.. cheers

BUT can it be removed by editing the BDMV file..? that's the real Q ..?

Ok, I have unknowingly changed something stupid with BDedit, cos now I am unable to save the file, and it save the changes. Specifically the PlayListMark setting for the new motion bkg (00003.mpls). If I reopen the same BDMV folder that I just had updated and saved, the changes for the PlayListMark are empty.!!?
Everything else is fine.

If I now manually add the data again in the PlayListMark box, shown in the attached jpg, and save. It's empty again when opening.

I do recall that at one time BDedit did show a question box that I had not seen before, when editing the timecodes, it asked if I wanted to update the 'out time' when I updated the 'in time', and another question again about the duration. I was copy/pasting so I did it all manually..

The outcome for the playback is that the menu bkgrnd plays for about a second and freezes. The text and title are still shown.
Any idea..?

Apologies for my newbie questions... (and probably my silly mistake somewhere)
Cheers CD

UPDATE...
Turns out that when BD-RB creates the BDMV folders with a quick-play menu that has the extra line for the background video [3 lines instead of 2], the required editing of the BDMV folder using BDedit does not work. It will not allow the editing of 00003.mpls. entry.
If the BDMV folder created by BD-RB displays a menu with only 2 lines [eg: minimum duration changed = 45 minutes] then the required editing with BDedit will succeed.

So it was not a stupid/finger problem care of me.
And all is now 'Quiet on the New Zealand front'.. haha

Hi there again, again
Is there an option to set the text of the created menu position/aligned to the center? currently is it aligned to the left.

This is getting interesting, glad I didn't break BDedit after all..

Below are the hidden options which provide for positioning the menu items where you want.

MENU_HORIZONTAL=n | n = 0-1919 - Offset from left of 1080p screen for QP menu item selection area (16 items/page max)
MENU_VERTICAL=n | n = 100-910 - Same as MENU_TOP - if both are used, MENU_TOP has priority
MENU_TOP=n | n = 100-910 - Offset from top of 1080p screen for QP menu item selection area, default = 200

And see the first post of this thread regarding my use of a test folder to create a given Quick-Play menu. It can be a real time-saver. ;)

Hi there, thanks for the info, but I think that those only control the positoning, not the alignment of the text on that line..
I will check out your way of creating the Q-P menu, as suggested... I am very rusty with Photoshop, but probably Gimp can do a similar job..

Nice job with your Homicide Hunter series menus, by the way..

I am using BDEdit 0.39b and have come across a couple of differences in the operation compared to your steps from earlier on..
and thought that it may be helpful to mention here..

"STEP 6: From BDedit (INSTANCE B) edit the MPLS file for the TOP MENU. Edit the "IN time" and "OUT time" values for the single Playlist Item (id 0) so that they match the values seen in the first instance of BDedit (INSTANCE A). Do the same for the single PlayListMark (id 0), then saving your changes.
I found that BDEdit will ask if I want to update the OUT TIME, LENGTH and the PLAYLISTMARK data by itself, when I update the IN TIME...

-------------------------------

STEP 7: If you want the video to play more than once just add duplicate instances of the PlayItem, then saving your changes. This is done by selecting the PlayItem (id 0) and pressing the "Insert" button on your keyboard. Hold the "Insert" button down to add duplicate PlayItems multiple times in rapid succession. A total of 998 PlayItems are supported per playlist. (The "Insert" function may or may not perform as I described based on the version of BDedit you're using.
)"
Correct, I don't seem to be able to achieve additional repeats of the menu background video [99001.m2ts]. The only box in the 'PLAYLIST' tab page of BDEdit that allows the insert button to add an additional item (in this case a menu video repeat) is the 'PlayList' section, but the related IN time, OUT Time and Length are all zeros. Right clicking on the line for the added item (id 001) allows 'edit mode', and manual editing for those timecodes, can be done. However, the menu video is not repeated when playing the BDMV folder in PDVD12.
In fact the menu text of the QP menu remains on screen after the menu background video has finished playback ie: the text remains on screen after the video has finished, even with a single play of the menu background video.

cheers CD
UPDATE..
Just noticed that the calculated LENGTH of the menu background video item is one ms different between that of the two instances of BDEdit. A = menu background and B = the compilation.

Lowpro

I found that BDEdit will ask if I want to update the OUT TIME, LENGTH and the PLAYLISTMARK data by itself, when I update the IN TIME...
Yes, this is normal. BDedit presumes that if you edit the "IN time" you also want to edit the "OUT time" and other values by the same increment. This won't always be the case however. When presented with the prompt simply choose "No" if you don't want BDedit to update the given field for you.

I don't seem to be able to achieve additional repeats of the menu background video [99001.m2ts].
As mentioned in my previous post, the inserting of additional Playitems may not function as I described based on the version of BDedit you're using. BDedit 0.39b is the free version of BDedit which was made available some 10 years ago. You can insert additional PlayItems with that version, but the values will be blank across the board. Once inserting the additional PlayItem you'll need to edit all its values, not just the values within the PlayList pane. You'll need to edit the values within the PlayList, STN, SubPath and PlayListMark panes. Once doing so the additional PlayItem should play as expected when testing via a software based Blu-ray player.

In fact the menu text of the QP menu remains on screen after the menu background video has finished playback i.e., the text remains on screen after the video has finished, even with a single play of the menu background video.
Correct. It doesn't matter whether a video is actively playing in the background or not. The TOP MENU is an "always on" menu. BD Rebuilder for instance creates a menu background that's .5 seconds in length. The video plays for .5 seconds and is effectively paused once played, the last frame of the video remaining on screen while on the TOP MENU. With my hardware based players the OSD will show the .5 second video being paused once it plays. After a second or two the OSD is no longer displayed. The TOP MENU continues to function as it should. Again, the TOP MENU is an "always on" menu.

Just noticed that the calculated LENGTH of the menu background video item (PlayItem) is one ms different between that of the two instances of BDEdit. A = menu background and B = the compilation.
Not sure what's going on there. The "length" of the PlayItems between instances of BDedit should match if the "IN time" and "OUT time" values are the same.
