I would like to take an IDX/SUB subtitle and merge subtitles from an SRT into it, to give a new combined IDX/SUB subtitle

TIA

Use freely available software to convert the IDX/SUB to SRT (i suppose using OCR and a lot of manual corrections), then merge it with your other SRT file.

As far as I know, IDX/SUB is a picture based subtitle format, srt is text ... can't do anything without converting one of them.

Yes I came to a similar conclusion and used Subtitle Edit to convert IDX/SUB to SRT then JOINed the 2 SRT files.

AVIAddxSubs 9.15 gives the potential to merge IDX/SUB with SRT, though only works with AVI - it writes XSUB subtitles into the AVI and saves as extension DIVX (really an AVI file). However the apparently embedded subtitles do not seem to behave predictably.

Try the SubMerger.

SubRip? For ripping subs, doesn't seem to have any "sub-merge" facility..

The subtitles you're trying to merge are in incompatible formats (not only different).

You need to covert the SRT to SUB or the SUB to OCR to SRT - what way is the best depends on your software (which may prefer one format of the other to process) and the final destination - SUB or SRT. Most people prefer to OCR to SRT.
