new player for AVI-SRT? or conversion tool?

Since the sub-forum title includes "display subtitles" I figure it can't hurt to ask in here. My Win7 box does subs just fine but my living room dvd player doesn't. Two players ago my Onkyo played AVIs with .srt subtitles. It finally died and I got a Pioneer, only to learn no .srt capability. Bummer, as I'm a bit hard of hearing and have several films with these subs. For me the easiest route would be just a new player, especially since there are other player features I'd like, but I can't find a database for srt capability. Anyone know?

My second choice would be to hard embed these srt files into the AVI or both AVI and SRT into a standard DVD. What's a good free tool for that?

For your hardcoding option, I believe you can use "AutoGK", specifically using Baldrick's guide at:

I believe you can also accomplish this using Staxrip or Handbrake.

You might also look into multiAVCHD...

Thanks, but reading over the user comments on Baldrick's guide is a bit discouraging. I'm ready (finally) to jump to a Blu player anyway, so I'd rather just find one that does SRT than learn another form of hoop jumping. I'll take a look at Handbrake next.

If I get your meaning, I take it you know the WDTV does SRT, so thanks - but the ports on my HTR and TV are already full up. Even if they weren't, there's no optical reader on the WD and I wouldn't want to re-home my legacy discs back to my hard drive anyway.

It'll definitely be faster than reencoding your stuff. Also, WDTV does SRT, VobSub (idx/sub) and PGS (from Blurays). If you definitely need a disc, check out Himedia, Dune, etc.
