Hi...

Is there any tool to OCR subs from any video format and container? I need something for h264 and mpeg2 in mkv. Here we have SubExtractor a few threads below, but it only works with DVDs. I tried looking but the majority of the programs are for OCRing vobsubs.

Thanks

You can OCR only bitmap based subtitles. Most subtitles in MKV are text based. So, you can OCR VobSub and PGS subtitles but not SRT, SUB, TTXT, ASS, SSA... as those are already text based.

For OCR you can use Subtitle Edit or SubRip.

Most subtitles in my MKVs are image based. Subtitle Edit/Subrip don't open MKVs.

SubtitleEdit can import subtitles from MKV files (and few other containers):
