Hey guys, I decided last week that I should start backing up my HD-DVD collection incase my HD-DVD/BluRay drive craps out.

I used to MakeMKV to extract the video file along with english audio and english subtitles in the MKV container, after that I used handbrake to encode the file.

I tried to play back the file with Mpc-HC and also VLC, but none of the subtitles work.

I was told I have to exact the subs with MKVextract (which I did and it gave me .idx and .sub files) and run them through BDSup2sub to convert them to a different format, and then remux them back in with MKVMerge.

Every time I try to run the .sub file in BDsup2sub it says "Invalid control buffer size"

I'm either doing it wrong or was given the wrong advise, so if anyone can help me I would appreciate it. I only started using all these programs a week or so ago, so I am not familiar with them at all.

All I want to do is get the HD-DVD subtitles to work in the encoded .Mkv file that I playback in Mpc-HC and VLC.

Can anyone give me some info, a step by step guide or link on how to do this please?

I'm going to have another try today and see how to get these subs working.

There is a complete guide on how to backup HD-DVDs on BDRs (and countless on how to transform a BD into AVI/MKV/MP4). Use search.

Did you read my post? Unless I am doing it completely wrong? I think I'm almost there, just having trouble with the HD-DVD subs.

I've tried searching and can't seem to find the answer I am looking for. If you actually know of any specific guides, how about giving me a direct link to one?

I don't know much about subtitles but I'll at least try to be helpful...

If you use MeGUI try it's HD Streams extractor to extract the subtitles from the disc. I "think" it'll also convert them to a format such as srt as it extracts, but don't quote me on that. I never work with subtitles. You might need something like AnyDVD HD running in the background to decrypt the disc. I assume MakeMKV does it's own decrypting?

Failing that try Subtitle Workshop. It's a free subtitle editor and it'll convert quite a few different subtitles formats. It might work with the subtitle files you already have extracted.

Because I don't have a HD-DVD thus I am not at all interested in this matter.

But I'm sure you'll find it easily, either here or with google.

Well, I am still reading about it so we'll see how it goes.

What programs do people use to rip BluRay subs and convert them? Maybe it's similar for HD-DVD?

It looks like you already resolved this at the MakeMKV forum (Posts by SamuriHL and myself)...

Hey, yeah I thought I did, but as it turns out those subs don't work properly. They start displaying and then certain bits of dialog doesn't show up at all with MPC-HC, which is what I mainly use. Don't like VLC that much.

I can't remember my password at the MakeMKV forum either, so that is one reason I didn't post back there. The other being SamuriHL seemed too busy to answer my questions most of the time. I'll have to reset it and post back there telling SamuriHL that, that method doesn't work properly.

Having said all that I think figured out how to do it now. I had to extract the .sup files from the HD-DVD as the ones in MakeMKV don't seem to be usable, and then I ran that .sup file through SupRip 1.16, where I had to manually OCR it and convert it to a .srt file. I then muxed the .srt file with MKVMerge into the MKV that I encoded with Handbrake, and now they seem to play all the way though. For some reason, the other method I used, they just stopped displaying at certain times throughout the movie.

Is this method correct? Will I get any probs doing it like that?

btw OT question - How does the audio sync work in MKVMerge? Does it always automatically join the video, audio, and subtitles together with the correct sync?
