Hi...
I created idx/sub files from a DVD, and I use vobsub to display them.
The problem is with the subtitle quality that vobsub displays.
While I very much love the look and feel of subtitles on DVD,
the same subtitles in idx/sub format look like crap when displayed
with vobsub in software player (BSPlayer).
How can I make idx/sub files in software player look the same
as they do when watching DVDs with PowerDVD?

Try a player that can display them natively. I frequently convert .srt to idx/sub using AviAddXSubs and use SPlayer to check them out. If the subs look like a smudgy pink color, it may be a YUV color space issue. When I convert to idx/sub I have to enable YUV in AviAddXSubs so that the subs look good on my WD set top box. But that makes them look smudgy pink on the PC. (These are white subs with black border. Another color may look different but it's usually kind of a muddy color if it's a YUV issue.)

Try MPC-HC's internal subtitle renderer. It is based on VSFilter (aka DirectVobSub), but allows rendering directly to the renderer (instead of a filter in the DirectShow chain which is limited to the video's dimensions).
You'll have to use EVR CP, madVR, or VMR7/9 renderless.

Thank you.
I tried Media Player Classic, and the idx/sub subtitles look awesome.
I also tested AviAddXSubs tool, to convert srt to idx/sub, and the subtitle quality is superb.

AviAddXSubs is a nice little program. I've been using it for years. It took me a long time to catch on that muddy pink subs on the PC look good on the TV in some cases. I wasted a lot of time trying to "fix" subs that weren't broken. :)
btw for ANSI text .srt I found using AviAddXSubs with Fontin TTF for Windows looks really nice:

It's personal preference of course. But I think these look great on my WD gen one set top box.
